Opinions, advice, loose facts all appreciated...

Background: I've got a 1987 90 running a 2.5TD. Nasty old engine but this one's in good nick and full of character (if not speed). Bulkhead was corroded and we've welded/patched it. L series gearbox is okay, but oil change at the w/e revealed a few metal filings (bearing prolly)and it's seeping a bit from the transfer box. Will need watching and eventually sorting.

All of this is fine, but it's going to need a new bulkhead at some point and the plan has always been to change the motor and gearbox (and floor, as a consequence) at that point whilst the whole thing's in bits anyway. L series box won't cope with a "proper" motor.

Thinking had always been a 300TDi (Defender) engine and an R380, but my Landy only does 30 miles a day on the lanes to the station and weekend fun use so I've been thinking V8...which would suit the look of the thing. Engine ought to be cheaper to buy, the fuel's cheaper and I'm going to need to do a fair few miles before I see the economic benefits of a diesel. Not up for LPG, for reasons I won't bore you with.

As I say, as the bulkhead and floor will have to be changed anyway, part of me is thinking I can effectively put what I like in there within reason.
TDi still probably the best overall option, but grateful for thoughts from them as has been around this buoy already please.

looking to change perkins conversion back to landrover engine(in a 1984 110) , everyone says 200tdi for reliability and ease of installation (defender engine )so going for that.
