Talking to a guy the other day and he has a 2.5 n/a 1987 100.000 mls
for sale at a good price, I can see it running but it's mounted on a pallet
with an exhaust and fuel supply. Apart from testing if it has excessive pressure from the rocker box and watching for smoke, what else can I do to see of it's a good engine?

If run without coolant then run time should be very short [just a few seconds] diesel combustion chambers heat up very fast and damage can result, not ideal. about all else you can do is listen to it.

whats a good price?? any guarantee? trade or private? I certainly wouldnt be paying over £150 .... any more and i'd be going tdi

cheers steve
I'm selling my N/A, it was fully rebuilt 2 years ago, done 1,500 miles since, had new £900 injector pump set up professionally, downside cambelt let go at 15mph 1/2 mile from home, no nasty noises just died. I'd accept an offer on it as is.
I'm going V8 with mine, tdi is very expensive to do now as decent 200tdi are like rocking horse **** to find and 300 is a lot harder conversion.

The guy is asking 450 quid, which out here is a reasonable price.
Spain ain't so sunny or cheap when you live here.(except booze) Also they wont let you swap engines without an engineers report, and that's expensive.

I'm going to be cheeky when I go to look at it, as the guy up top said don't run the
engine without water, so i'll take a rad, hoses and a gallon of antifreeze.
If he doesn't let me hook it up I ain't buying it

Good plan, expect smoke on start up and it may be reluctant to go if glow plug's not connected. When warm there should be little smoke and just normal diesel rattle. good luck.
