I'm taking my Disco TD5 for MOT on saturday. The test in N.Ireland involves a handbrake test on a rolling road. The front and back brakes are also tested separately, using the foot brake on the rolling road.

Is there any issues about testing the Disco handbrake or foot brake on a rolling road?

Cheers

you can't do a brake test on a rolling road because it's permanent four wheel drive, definately don't do the handbrake when moving cause it works on the the transmision and will wreck it. They should know this at the garage if they got any knowledge.

you can test foot brakes on a 4 wheel rolling road, or on a 2 wheel rolling road, providing the speed does not exceed 5Km/Hr (Diff lock OFF).

Not sure about handbrake.

OK, just did a few searches and I can't find it. In fact I can't find much of anything. Is Search working properly at present??? Anyone know?

The modern brake testers do 4x4 they turn the wheels in opposite directions. If you stick the diff lock in however it kind of ****s it up though.

They also do transmission brakes as well.

The control has settings for this, however if you do a brake test without this facility it breaks the propshaft, one of my mates did it years ago.

Without it you do a test on a gradiant, you must be stopped though pull it on moving with the tapley and it ****s the prop as well, so no hand brake turns with one.

If you pull on the transmission brake while the vehicle is moving you run the danger of breaking a half shaft. Somewhere on this site there is a technical post from CharlesY explaining why! The brake should be tested on a gradient. That said, testers have always tested mine on the road, using a portable meter. No halfshafts have broken yet. (Test next month: oh b*** what have I just said?)

yer fookin doomed, get some lucky white heather.

I passed the MOT. Sweeeeet!

I asked about the 4x4 brake test issue and the guy mentioned that they set the brake machine for 4 wheel drives and only some rollers in the MOT centre have 4x4 capability. I was happy enough with that as it pretty much backed up the story I got over the phone from the Technical Manager. Unless of course this is the standard pack of lies:rolleyes:

Time to start Waxoyling now!

Cheers
