In the morning my P38 starts fine and sounds ok. Reverses off drive OK. I then have to go up a steep hill. There is a temporary loss of drive when I hit the gas. Lasts for about 15 seconds then all seems ok. Doesnt happen again unless been parked up all day.

Any ideas what this could be - I dont know where to start looking.?

Cheers,
Steve

If it's loss of power (not drive) then I had exactly the same problem - fine starting, go down the end of the close, turn onto main road, hit the gas - and no power for 2-3 seconds (admittedly not 15 seconds...). Then fine for the rest of the day.

Problem was air mass sensor. Engine was running lean on diagnostics, so maybe you can check for this? (Bit expensive to replace the sensor only to find out it's something else).

Ita a 4.0 petrol.

When it happens if I push accelerator to floor nothing happens. It doesn't rev up nor does it drive. Can't really work out what is nhappening but it feels more like loss of drive to begin with?

Disconnect it and see how it drives

Sounds like the same symptoms as mine, I disconnected the MAF and what a difference! Gave it a good cleaning with electrical cleaner solvent, seemed to help a bit but not sorted it so have added a new MAF to the list of jobs to do to it!!

Don't really want to go secondhand and def not going with a cheap pattern one of ebay after so many people slag them off so just need to do some homework on where is the best (cheapest!!) place to get either a new genuine or if anyone can recommend a good worthwhile pattern supplier?

To test start it up, disconnect it whilst keeping the revs up a bit to keep it running, then take it for a drive, if it's better with out it then that's your problem, so they tell me!....simples!!

they not cheap..£160 from local parts place...(bosch) but it was a five minute job and an instant fix:D garage quoted me £300 to supply n fit

My local independent charged £148 for a new MAF (genuine Bosch).

Plus, of course, some labour to fit it, carry out diagnostics (before and after), check for any air leaks, and a test drive afterwards - and knowing him I bet he enjoyed himself :).

Checked the transmissonn fluid level. It was OK - fluid came out when I removed the filler plug therefore couldnt put any in.

Tried disconmnecting the MAF. Because without MAF it was lumpy on low revs I couldnt really say if it was better when setting off, definitely no worse though.

Any other ideas or info on how I can diagnose a MAF fault?

Thanks,
Steve
