anybody know of a decent capillary temp gauge i can buy, preferably one that the sender bit fits in the top hose

Try looking up TIM gauges.They make mechanical and electrical ones for reasonable prices.

Tim are good - also Durite - it's easy to get bushes or adaptors to fit the sender bulb in place of the original [****] electrical one - any good diesel machine shop/factors will have them or be able to get them
