I have replaced the temperature sender on my 1994 Discovery 300TDI but gauge still not working. Any ideas?

It could be that its just the cold temperatures. Mine at the moment driving round town does not move from the botom, faster drive on the motorway then it moves up to just above the first line.

How long have you had the car?

Mine is a 200tdi with a higher rated thermostat.

My 200tdi Disco is very slow to warm up according to the gauge. I have fitted a new thermostat and it still takes about ten miles town driving to get warm. Get on the motorway though and the heat comes through instantly and the gauge comes up to half way. I'm wondering if the sender is wrong but dont know what colour it should be.
Going to flush the lot out when the hose pipe thaws..:D

Check you have electrical continuity and that the guage does work by shorting out the wire from the sender to earth

This should show maximum on the guage with ignition on, but proves all is working

Do you have warm air fron interior vents?
Are radiator pipes warm / hot?

I am getting warm air. What do I have to do to short the wire from the sender to check for electrical contnuity?

Just pull wire off the sender on side of engine, then either

1/ With assistance - one person watches the gauge while the other holds the metal connector to the engine block, with ignition on

2/ alone - get a wire and connect up an earth point to the connector, then go and turn ignition on and watch the gauge
