Hey guys, my fuel gauge was broken when i bought my landy (which i didnt know so broke down on the m1 : / ) and i bought a new sensor but it was the wrong one so now its lowest point is half full...My temp gauge broke the other day, now it just reads in the red all the time...i think that they are both problems with the sensor cos the gauges still moves when i crank him?
Can anyone give me a few tips? Ive heard that the fuel gauge and temp gauge may be connected somehow, can anyone give me more info. Also does anyone know where I can get a new set of gauges and what kind I would need? Ive got a 1986 90. cheers : )

There is usually a common positive feed to both gauges.

Disconnect both gauges from the sensor sides and then put a bit of wire between the terminals and earth. They should both read 'full' or 'hot' depending on which one you are testing.

If they do, then there is nothing wrong with the gauges. If they don't, check that you got them connected the right way round.

They are both routed via a resitance of the gauges to earth which gives you the reading.

Then try shorting the temp gauge terminal to earth at the sensor lead, and see if it's 'hot' on the gauge. If so, it sounds like the sensor has gone and needs replacing.

Hope this helps.

and if you need new gauges, the usual LR Parts places stock them (but seriously expensive) or they do come up on ebay reasonably frequently.

Alternatively the TIM gauges are a reasonable match to the LR original ones (and much cheaper) if you get stuck.

Think they're standard 52mm diameter gauges
