You should looking at the coolant temp sender on the head somewhere, there maybe two.one is for the ECU and the other for the temp gauge. Unless your motor is different. Sorry I can't be of any more help.
I have the older 2.5td and I have two sender's. I replaced them both as they were looking a bit green and one was loose.
Good luck;)

Thanks Mark will look at that tomorrow.

I think you need diagnostics on it before you start changing things, that is one very electrically complicated beast. Diagnostics will let you see the sensor reading and test the gauge

There is only one temp sender for the gauge. Brown or blue, aircon/year dependent. The green one is for the ECU.

Post #1 is about a 3.0ltr RRS, no one has definitively answered his question, Mark's comment was vague or related to the P38 as did your answer.

I don't really care what post #1 was about i was answering Mark. If you know where the temp sender is on the OPs car tell him, i don't have a clue.

Mark was not asking about the P38 sensors,he just stated he replaced both while trying to help the OP about which he you and I have no clue, which is why I suggested it needs diagnostics.

If it runs okay it’s likely a minor problem of gauge playing up or somesuch.

If it overheats itl likely go into limp mode so you would know

If you haven’t got diagnostics, take it to an independent garage that can read it. DONT just take their word on what they say problem is - get the actual code number that it throws ;)

Under the manifold towards the rear of the head. It's a two wire plug.
