not a bad idea to check over all those items, will help you learn more about the great landy
you will feel satisfied once you find the fault.
Work your way through the basics first a lot of the time it will be something minor. Just a process of elimination

Yeh, just guna take abit of time to work it out I think! Cheers for your help mate, and sorry for hijacking the thread! :)

right, checked the earths.. all but the one on the transferbox. but i cant see it being that to be honest.. as i havnt touched whilst changing my engine.. i will check tho.. also changed the belts which made my powersteering miles better but bothing to solve the problem! but my dad said it seems more like an alternator issue.. he recons its likely to be the diode pack, but i cant think of a way to test that!??

Pretty sure it's the alternator, the temp rises when cruising at 50 then drops if I put my clutch in.. Will flush the rad as precaution but seems more alternator to me!

Just check your power feed off the back of your alternator. With engine off should be between 12-13v with engine running around 13 to 14v. Alternatively you may find a battery center near you that can test the state of your battery and charge system free of charge.
once you have flushed your radiator it might be a good idea to test operation of your thermostat in a glass of boiling water

Cheers fella, will have a play when the rain stops! Also remembered there was a small earth strap from my old engine to the engine mount on the chassis, I haven't put it on this engine as it snapped. So will make a new one up and see if that helps.

good idea. when your vehicle gets hot check both upper and lower radiator hose temperature. gives a good sign as to the water flow through the system

Yehh, when I first fitted the engine and rad and went for a drive, it got really hot, so flushed it and a load of rusty coloured water came out, after that it has been fine. So will give it another go! Cheers mate.

well, just stuck the multimeter across everything and the battery is spot on, 12.87v and the alternator is kicking out 14.72v, so just stuck a make shift earth cable from the timing belt cover to the bulkhead earth and it seems to have solved it! my stereo doesnt dim, but i havent tried a run to see if the temp gauge works.

Hi All,

I'm new on here and have been having the same problems as described on this thread. By the sound of it, in simple terms improving the earth from the bulkhead seems to fix the problem. As with most electrical issues mine is intermittent and i don't like electrics:confused:

Any more advice?:)
