Apologies, I'm a newbie on here. I introduced myself in the right area but didn't know where to put a technical/coolant system query.
From the top, briefly-
Bought a 200tdi Defender Hi Cap (1993) for work purposes, a couple of months ago. Fantastic all round.
Drove the 2 hours home with the temp gauge hardly registering above COLD.
Changed thermostat, and bam, when up to temp it was 3/4 towards the top end (hot)...
I felt this looked a bit high.
As it was a new (to me) vehicle I thought it prudent to change a few components.
Several thermostats
New Airtex water pump
New silicone hoses
Re-cored copper rad
New header tank cap
New senders/sensors
A couple of coolant changes.
Probably not an exhaustive list.
Anyhow, I also changed the gauge, to an original replacement. After all this I decided to fit a VDO temperature gauge instead, to get a more accurate reading.
I must add that the truck has run beautifully, with no actual 'signs' of any problem. No bubbling, no loss of coolant, engine oil still lovely and clean 'amber' colour.
But ...
My gut, and seeing anecdotal stories of the 200tdi being cool running, makes me question mine.
It's a 93 Hi cap and had an excellent lump from Turner Engineering put in (2012) ... 139,000 miles on the clock, but it's only done 30,000 since the recon was put in.
I want to add some pics of the VDO showing my up to temp reading.
Maybe some of you have experience in this department?
Temp laser gun shows 95°C at the hottest part of block underneath thermostat housing. Radiator is warm/hot uniformly. Top hose gets hot, bottom gets nice and warm. Heater works great. Thermostat housing when I touch the top is pretty much too hot to keep your hand on. Expansion tank only gets mildly warm.
I'm trying to cover as much as possible here, but I've probably left something out.
Hope someone out there can help a little, or at least put my mind at ease?

I'm going to try to add one after my run at idle, which shows around 90°C.
