I'm in the process of replacing one of our Tdi 300s and am thinking about a Td5 as a second towing vehicle/comfort car...

I've had two Td4's which despite the usual Vcu problems and a catastrophic breakdown with one (my fault) were excellent in the snow and great for towing- which is essential where we live.

I wonder if there are any particular problems with the Td5 as I'm really fond of the TDi 300 and may well hold out for another good one as a keeper?

*if you have a decent 300 see the wanted section ;) *

Need to make sure they are good ones.

Make sure you are happy with the twin oil filter arrangement, and keep an injector loom in stock.

The TD5 is a whole world different to the TDi300, more powerful, but not as torquey low down (but this may be due to more power). You occasionally need to rev a TD5 but they do like it. Sound good too.

I have a TD5, a friend has a TDi.

Main difference is I use low range on lanes (engine revs) he can get away with high range.

Td5 Discoveries are being slayed at an alarming rate by rear chassis rot.
The way the inside of the chassis is reinforced causes water become trapped which means they slowly rot from the inside. The chassis may look good on the outside untill one day the metal splits and reveals the horror beneath.

:car::DI have had both, bought a new D2 in 2002 first face lift in town , If you can find a good D2 go for it . Mine has 107.000miles on the clock only had to change injector loom and rear air bags at eight years old, and wax oiled the day after I bought it, great car.

if it is an every day car td5 if weekend for greenlaning 300 tdi although they are both good if i was going to get second disco i would try and find a good 300 tdi

Yes, I'm leaning towards a third Tdi. There are a few on fleabay but obviously I have a slight problem with checking them out beforehand. Luckily I'm not desperate, but I need something before October/winter time.

If I was rich enough to have bought a Td5 new then I too would be happy... :) and wayoil would have been my first step.

Where I live is a mix of on/off road every day, and the winters can be harsh so we need two 4x4 vehicles - they are not 'playthings' for the weekend ;)

I have an advert in the wanted section with an email reference should anyone have a decent tdi. Hilarious that someone asked if I looked in the for sale section:jaw:
But thanks for the reminder...
