I've recently been given a 1994 Discovery TDi for use as a tow vehicle and maybe even a bit of green laning (after a 4x4 day at the start of the year I can't wait to get off-road again!).

She has an MOT until December, but on it are a few advisories that I'd like to get sorted before then;

1) light corrosion to both sills
2) oil leak to rear offside hub
3) shocks misting

So any info and advice on what to look for/how to rectify any of the above would be greatly appreciated!

I was looking at a 2" lift kit, but having seen a few threads on here regarding issues with bushes and other joints I don't think Its a worthwhile change to make, so would love recommendations for standard height heavy duty replacement shocks and springs to give her a refresh.

Anyway, here's a few pics;

Thats a tidy looking D1 - and if thats all it needs, even better!!

Im running standard height/heavy duty springs and shocks atm - its given about a 2 inch rise over how it was (most of that'll be due to the tired/old suspension it replaced...) - rides great and tows superbly (caravan, car/plant trailer, chippers...)

Check that "light corrosion" on the sills.... have the plastic covers been removed, they have a huge propensity to trap water and rot the inner/out sills.

Oil leak - simply sounds like a hub seal - lovely job!

Good luck with it - welcome to LZ and dont be afraid to ask for help on here...!

Thanks for your info Paul, much appreciated! I'll get some decent pics of the sill when I can, hopefully will give a better idea of what I'm dealing with!

I've done a little search regarding the hub seal, is it a difficult job? I've done plenty of suspension work on my track car, which is a pain as its all tight and fiddley!! Just a case of replace with the following seal and job done...

Anything else to look at doing while I'm there?

I've been recommended Terrafirma suspension kits as an option for standard height, just got to find somewhere that sells them at a decent price!

Sounds like youre a competent wrench-weilder - so this should be straighforward for you. Get yourself a copy of LR Rave, its all covered in there.

Terrafirma - usually very good and reliable stuff, and reasonably priced for the more standard stuff too. Im using the blue-boxed stuff (Britpart) on mine, theres loads of good and bad reports on much of their stuff but personally ive never had a problem with their suspension components (but i have seen a few that have had problems...). mines used as a general workhorse/tug/occasional family car and not had any problems.

dont forget to change the steering damper while your on....

Thanks once again, I've downloaded LR Rave, looks like a handy piece of kit!

I have seen Brit Part, they seem to have a lot of options out there, with springs and shocks about £200, just searching for a full kit that offers standard height and heavy duty in a kit form, struggling at the minute! I've now got a Terrafirma steering damper in my watch list too! ;)
