I have just bought a 06 56 TD6,Test drive was fine however the vehicle needed new tyres so seller put set of nearly new on the car. Car was fine until got on the motorway ,as soon as it reached 65mph it started to judder it seemed to come from under the car rather than through the steering wheel. Took it to the local tyre place who checked the front wheels and found that they hadnt been balanced at all so they balanced the two on the front , i thought that should have fixed the problem, however on the way home on the motorway the judder was still there, could it be the back wheels need to be balanced as well or although not to mechanically minded could it be something to do with the propshaft. cars done 39000 miles and has 18" factory fit wheels.any help or advice would be much appreciated.

When you drive all four wheels at the same time all tyres have to be the same size.
If one is slighty smaller than the rest you set up vibration untill you put a new set of continental mega bucks jobbers on.

If it is shaking vigorously and moving the steering wheel about in your hands it could well be the front lower wishbone bushes although thats a little unlikely because your car is relatively new, but if it has spent its time bouncing over speed bumps the rubber bushes will deteriorate quickly.

I had the same problem with my old 2002 TD6 last year, not a massive job to replace, I had to do all four on the front of mine before it was cured.

If its just a slight vibration then its probably more to do with the tyres being out of balance

get all 4 wheels properly aligned. This means getting the tracking done. To do this they need a special bit of kit the name of which i can't remember, but I got mine done at Protyre for £50 + Vat. That was 9 months ago and it drives beautifully smooth and straight ever since.

Fellas thanks very much you were all pretty spot on, it was a mixture of wheel balancing and the part worn tyre on the front being slightly bowed, i wasn't sure if it was the balancing as i had the two fronts balanced didnt really think the back wheels made such a difference but it obviously does.thanks again for all your help .Cheers Gary
