hi all ,
I have a td6 which stopped charging the battery so I put in a brand new alternator earlier today but it is not charging, I checked the voltage on new alternator at the positive pole on rear of alternator and its not putting out 14v only getting what ever reading is in the battery.
any ideas or is the new one a dud?

Use a dvm and check the positive on the alt for output and use the body of the alt for the negative. It'll prove the alt for output and if there is output but nothing at the battery. There could be an earth issue through the alt to engine via the mounting or earth strap. Do a continuity test, alt body to chassis, alt body to battery negative, châssis to battery negative.

thanks for the replies chaps.
got another new alternator, fitted and fired right up.
beware tho the supplier didn't want to refund or exchange faulty alternator unless I left 230quid with them until 1st one was checked by their supplier (well until their big boss got a phone call from one of his oldest customers )

I'm still no further on with the exhaust leak. It's only apparent above idle and seems to be getting worse.
I've checked as best i can on all joints including the flexi bit and can't see any soot marks that would give it away.
I've even considered the idea it could be a head gasket leak but it runs too well for that
