I have purchased an extended breather kit but it didn't come with wading plugs, are they needed for a TD5?

You should have a wading plug in your gearbox housing anyway. if you dont, get one if you plan on taking it off road. lol.
You dont need to ever remove it, well only once a year to check if you have a leak.
I think mine is a plug that accepts a 3/4 ratchet. Its the central plug at the bottom of the bell housing closest to the engine i think.
