TD5 turbo, are 10p and 15 the same???

hi guys , defenders turbo has a worrying amount of play and is using oil so would like to replace it before it breaks , know of a 10p turbo does anyone know if this will fit my 15p engine?

Does your turbo whistle? Mine gets really noisy at speed.

yeah its very noisy at speed or higher rpm
can also hear it when you switch her off for a split second you can hear the turbo still whistling as it slows down

do you think urs is knackerd?

is it defo turbo you here when you switch off and not the rotor oil filter

stick your finger on the shaft for the turbine and it stops instantly along with the noise so im guessing yes , theres also the whizz from the rotary oil filter

Kin hope not, just done clutch, flywheel ,clutch master and slave cylinder , new cross member and four new uj,s, still got injector loom to replace and diesel leak to fix

just done diesel leak,injector loom,wiper motor,worm,wiper wheel boxes , clutch master and slave cylinder

still got to do cross member , clutch/flywheel amd now turbo

out of interest whats the milage on yours?

Just over 100000, but I did have it rebuilt at about 80000 after I sunk it at a pay and play ( school boy error no snorkel didn't check the depth of hole)

ouch I bet that wasent cheap !

similar experience has just wrecked my TDI engine in my other 90

my TD5 has done 127000miles to be fair its done 3000m hard offroading and towing in the 2 months iv owned it and hasent given me much grief considering

just purchased that 10p turbo for £30

Was that from someone you know, or ebay buy, if it's kosher you've got yourself a bargain

Be honest with you, never heard a diesel turbo that did not whistle. mine does at speed and when going to idle, but always let it idle a bit before shutting it off to let turbo cool a bit.

Next time you get next to a lorry on the motor way roll your window down and see if you can hear theirs, eggspecial when they shift gears

turbo was a local ebay buy came off a vehicle with head problems apparently , if its any good your right it will be a bargain !

thor , im aware all diesel turbos whistle but mine is stupidly loud , my Passat did exactly the same before it exploded into bits ! lorry turbos are huge! had an MAN in a few months ago had to remove both turbos for a poxy £20 EGR pipe !

£20 for the pipe and £££ at least for the labour!

Whistling turbo isn't necessarily the Turbo knackered, it's usually caused by a boost leak.

That being said my 200tdi whistles, that's only got 76k on, and our 2012 Nissan Juke DCI really whistles and that's only done 17k so a whistling turbo isn't uncommon nor necessarily an issue!

And there's whistling and WHISTLING, a knackered turbo is usually more of a moan than a whistle.

in my case its more the turbine play im worried about lots of side play and end float and usage of oil

The td5 turbo has play at the shaft when not under oil pressure, the bearing is actually a bush that self centres the shaft on a bed of oil. If there are no chipped blades or does scores on the housing then it's probably fine. Rebuild kits aren't expensive btw

no chipped blades or scores on the housing , there is a chip or cut out right at the front where the nut bolts the impeller on though , is this normal?

cheers I hadent realised they have play normally !

The bit by the nut is probably where they have ground some metal off to balance it. I assume it looks like a man made mark (machined) rather than rough?

ah of course ! cant believe iv been so thick recently lol , yes I think your right there matey its a balancing mark , its hard to tell rough or man made but now its been mentioned im pretty certain that's what it is
