TD5 Smoke on Gear Change

Hi!
I've got a 53 plate defender 90 TD5, and in the last couple of weeks it has started smoking more and more, specifically when I am changing up gears. It happens in all gears and is worse when accelerating harder. I've checked for splits in the turbo pipes and intercooler and all look in good condition. It has had an upgraded turbo and tuning from TMD around 3 years ago and the turbo hoses are silicone (can these delaminate?). Since the upgrades it's done about 10000 miles (maybe less).
Any suggestions on what could be causing this black smoke, keen to get it sorted as I think it's affecting fuel consumption as well!

It's got an ITG air filter and I've bought a cleaning kit for it but haven't used it yet, I didn't think it looked to bad though. Would this cause the smoke when changing gear?

I would start with the less expensive options first like air and fuel filter change. On a trip to Morocco a couple of Defenders started smoking a bit when there air filters needed changing. You haven't mentioned if the smoke is black or blue?

Smoke is black, and I've changed oil, oil filters, and fuel filter about 800 miles ago
 
I would try changing the air filter. I personally prefer original air filters. One of the Morocco group on his return from Morocco when going through Spain his 300 tdi engine blew. He had it relayed back to the UK and had a recon engine fitted.The experts recons it was due to the air filter not filtering the sand dust. all the rest of us with standard air filters didn't have any problems.

The itg filter is a lifetime one so I'll just clean it! Thanks for the advice
