I have a 2003 LR Defender TD5 with about 188 000Km done by the engine, NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS, until a recent trip to Zambia. The Landy started to loose power and ref very high. At a stage it was so bad it struggeled to get 60km/h. A local service station to have a look, but found no faults except that there was more than 20liter of diesel in the engine, they drained it, but there was still no power. Every 200kms on the way home it was necessary to stop and everytime drained in excess of 20l of diesel.

Back at home I had a diesel mechanic take a look; he replaced the 5th injector (as it was “completely burned up” – explaining the amount of diesel seeping through to the oil) as well as 4 glow plugs. The Landy could now reach 100km/h with a lot of effort, but still had no power. The exhaust gasses are also very black and three times as bad/much as before. (Literally a cloud of smoke)

I then took it to Steve’s Auto Clinic (SAC), where they did several tests on it and found no performance issues, the booster, turbo and compression seemed fine, but according to their tests the engine only delivers 43kW. They said that the cam-timing might be out, thus basically misfiring, but on stripping the cam found the timing was correct. They suggested to change all the injectors, but can’t guaranty that it is the problem.

I then went to a friend who put a compression dial/meter on and found the compression to be 1.3 compared to 1.4 on another working Landy. He advised me to change the Diesel and air filters. I did so, but still no power and it still “smokes” so bad that I can’t see the road through my review mirror.

Currently the Landy suffers to pull away, but at more or less 2000rpm (where the turbo kicks in) starts to accelerate slowly. I can’t even reverse out of my driveway (about 10 degrees incline) without putting it into low range 4x4 diff lock.

What can be the problem?
