Hi guys, done a similar post a few weeks ago but didn't gather the info/research I required, I'm after finding out which engine you prefer for on the road in daily use around town and on some long journeys. So if you don't mind could you state which engine you prefer with a reason.
Kind regards, matt.

Love these kinda posts.

You may as well ask what everyones favourite breakfast cereal is while your at it. Your going to get everyones personal opinion. You need to go and drive them yourself. ;) Dont base a decision on what you heard from a few people on a forum.

True what BGB says, but I've got both and it's the Td5 every time.:D;)

TD5 you can tweak it to whatever hp you need to suit needs, upto about 245hp. 300 tdi is about 150hp.What are you wanting it to do? You have not given any clues to what you want or looking for. how much money to spend, what are your skills, are you capable to do a complete chassis up restoration

Finally how long you want the damn thing to last/keep.

There is no simple answer. Apples are apples what is your favorite?????? Mine are Honey Crisp and matsu for eating and granny smith for pies. And 4-5 different apples for apple sauce and cider

He never mentions a tdi John, it's Td5 or Tdci..;)

I'm after people personal opinions, I drove a td5 the other day at an offroad site however it wasn't in the best condiditon at all, seemed to be burning a hell of a lot of oil and the gearbox was really tight compared to our tdi. I've also drive the tdci off road and as nice as it is to drive with all that power and the extra gear for cruising I just miss the land rover dashboard with the flaps and the land rover feel. In the tdci it feels like an every day car where as the td5 just felt proper even though It did have issues.
I'd be after the occasional bit of green laning but mainly for road use and long journeys and the occasional bit of towing. I'm steering slightly to the tdci side at the moment because of the issues that td5 had however I love the sound of a td5.
I would be looking to keep the land rover for a good 10 years or so.

That's one had serious gearbox issues, couldn't select any gear very easily and the famous cylinder head issue and oil in the ecu problem.
Web ad a td5 disco and it was fine but it was auto so acted completely different to the Manuel

The TDCI would be perfect if it wasn't so Clunky, the r380 in the TD5 is smooth and the engine power is smooth the tech is very powerful and torquey but it hits you like a wall and the clutch is heavy and gears stiff. It will probably be very good once the gearbox has loosened up abit

The famous head issue was changed in 2002 me thinks so 2003-2006 don't have the head issue as early models. Oil in loom was a fix also. The TDCI with the 6 speed was to make up for shortcomings of the engine the r 380 is a much stronger gear box, Plus tdci is more restricted to engine mods as the new EU requirements for diesels engines, and they are loaded up with alot more electric stuff than any other model defender out there.
And there are thrashed to **** models out there and some very nice ones. What is your budget for 1?

My budget is all up in the air at the moment. I need to flog my mini first wich literally just broke again. Probably get around £4000 for that. Got £2k to spare and my dad said he will help me so I reckon about £13,000 or so. Maybe if I come across a particularly low mileage one in good nick then I may be able to stretch a little more with the help of my dad

For that kind of money you can get a very nice 2006 TD5, and mileage unde 70k.

Saw one this week 13k looked new inside and out with just under 35,000 miles.

You wont find much in a tdci for that money. which model 110/90 hard top or csw, Oh and are you in the london fog/smog rules area

I'm currently 16, I got quoted £3100 for a td5 and inthe price didn't change regarding a tdi or tdci engine. Yes I am in the fog and smog zone but I can currently get away with a late td5 90 hardtop and the tdci hardtop. Personally I prefer the look of the hardtop but either as long as a 90 or a 110 double cab. If I was very lucky a 110 utility would be nice
