So after years of D1 ownership (several v8's, a 200 tdi, and a couple of 300's) i've moved up to a 2000 Td5.

A few surprises - fuel economy worse than the 300, and shockingly - it doesn't seem to have the go of the 200! I tow regularly (I have to take an ISO cube of water to the horses every fortnight, so that's a tonne + the trailer) and it really feels the trailer on the back.

What i've noticed is that its useless in the low rpms, when the turbo kicks in around 1800 its better, but then it all dies off at 3000, and it sounds like the tappets have gone - ie chattery

I've now had it for a month, and have replaced/checked

injector loom - slightly better feel but no great change
air flow meter - old one was missing one of the two sensors
wastegate - moving freely
ecu - no oil present

any thoughts suggestions?

fit egr blanking kit and a k&n air filter will help a bit you can alter the waste gate lever but dont go more than 3/4 of a turn or the ecu will sense over boost and go into limp mode ;)
tbh mate you have to re-learn to drive it ie there is loads of power in that short band width to be had.
you can get a external boost chip for yours (quite often come up on ebay ;)) or go to a specialist that can fit a chip into your ECU should alleviate most of your concerns.

oh forgot , if you are half sensable with spanners hwen you do the egr valve take the intercooler and inlet manifold off and clean um (if you can live without it for a day or so) i cleaned mine with turps smoked like a bastid afterwards as i rushed it :D need to let it drain and evaperate off before restarting.

I think we can call me half sensible with the spanners :) Thanks Buckshot - will give it a shufty when I can plan some downtime (currently covering just over 1000 business miles a week)

Our TD5 Disco is our first Landy and when the wife first drove it a snail overtook her! Certainly a different experience, it is necesary to use the power band to get it moving, and compared to my diesel Focus (or MX5's or Fiat 500s) we find we have to use a lot of throttle that we just arnt used to.

If it ever gets back from the garage (clutch/Flywheel/prop shaft, master and slave cylinder etc) I am going to get a decent air filter and remove the EGR and do an oil change which by all accounts should help - we are looking out for a horse trailer to tow 2 16.1 horses, so there is going to be some weight on there........Fuel consumption doesnt seem that bad so far, will report further once I have done some miles in it.

Our radio keeps cutting out and searching on here seems its worth looking at the earth from the battery to the wing, which corrodes.......ours is a 2001, might be worth looking at that (but unrelatd to the lack of power)

There's a MAP sensor in the manifold that can get gunked up and affect performance. It just needs a spray with contact cleaner to sort out. This made a big difference to my TD5.

Had the MAP sensor out today, and it was caked in crud. First run, rev'd smoothly through to 5K, awesome this is more like it I thought.

Next run, gets "held back" around 3K, hmm, so this suggests a gremlin somewhere!

Will get a new MAP and see if that's the culprit.

Good news on the MAP cleaning.

There is also a sensor on the airbox that would be worth cleaning.

Also, on my TD5 I adjusted the wastegate rod a little bit. I think I shortened it a couple of turns. I can't remember the ins and outs of it but if you do some digging around on google you would get some info on it. Definitely read up on it before making any changes. This improved the boost from the turbo.

well, I cleaned the MAP, and that helped, and then I reached a plateau and couldn't find owt else wrong, so it was time to bite the bullet and get it plugged in somewhere. Whilst I was up at my HQ in Chesterfield, I found Cavendish Motor Workshops, and in under an hour the problem was solved - fuel filter! I now rev through to 5K without issue, still sounds chattery over 3K, but the power is there. Going to get a boost guage and play with the wastegate next

thanks all
