AHAH!

So, it only happens on the over-run then?

This means it CAN NOT BE cam followers, rockers, and almost certainly not injectors either.

It happens when you take your foot OFF the throttle pedal .....

Like the engine leans over the other way a little from driving .... ?

HHmmmm...... (that's me thinking!)

yes thats it on the over run ??????

Some parts of an engine are LOAD SENSITIVE, and other parts are not.
This is not speed - it is LOAD

Pistons, conrods, crankshaft, and everything after the flywheel are load sensitive, including clutch, gearbox, drop gears, transfer box, centre diff, prop-shafts, diffs, half-shaft splines, wheel bearings and drive shaft UJs, to mention but a few.

Timing chain, camshaft, cam-followers, valves and springs are NOT load sensitive. A ticketty hydraulic cam follower will be the same ticketty all the time, just a faster ticketty as the speed goes up.

So ... your description seems to suggest the noise comes with no load on the engine, and stops when there is a load.

Start hunting the load sensitive trail.

ok thanks its to do when de accelarating but really tappy noise all td5 have the same noise but its quieter mine is loud the noise is to lite to be crank or any big major part of the engine it sounds top end to me tried timing chain no slack in it what so eva dnt know what to do...

How can you say it's top end noise if you can only hear it when you are driving?

From your description, it CAN NOT be any item that is not load sensitive. So if that's right you can forget about the whole timing chain and valves mechanism for a start, and probably the injectors and their rockers too.

What about a worn crank harmonic damper? my TD5 sounds tappy and was originally thinking it was injectors/lash adjusters etc but when reved over 3000rpm, the engine sounds perfect. I also have a vibration at 2000 - 2500 rpm which is engine related (and when engine sounds it's worst) and can be also be felt on overrun

same ere snow gone but rain now im sick to death of it now it was fun when first came.... yeah will be checking that tomoz without fail my dads mates one came off and done loadsa damage

Sounds like timing chain tensioner if on the overrun , also check eng oil pressure with a gauge it might be enough to put the light out but not enough to keep the hydlolic followers happy , just a thorght
