Right im thinking of starting a project next year sometime. and i want to put a td5 with and auto gearbox into a defender.

ive been looking at other threads and they all say have a look at ashcroft transmisions for the whole kit, but this costs around £4500 including vat.

so i was thinking why not buy a disco 2 for around £5000 strip it down and transfer the whole lot over to the defender. but i cant find anyone else who has done this. anyone have any thoughts on this
cheers jack

Oh and please no one say its easier to put a 200tdi in. :lalala:

Done it with a v8 and 4speed auto, they put the td5 in them and they put autos in them so everything must be available, in theory it'd be a better conversion cos all your ecu's would be linked! I had pondered doing it and using the axles (modified) and keeping the abs hdc etc:) it would be a very trick 90/110. Maybe one day

Think I'd start with a td5 defender and buy a box for it.

It will be much less hassle, and probably cheaper too!

that sounds good to me but not so sure about the auto box (never been a auto box fan tbh)

I built a 3.5 EFI one with a 4 speed auto, it made it much nicer to drive, I'm 6'3" so it improves the knees round your chin problem when changing gear, which gives me hip ache to go with the sore elbow;) I loved it, it was great fun to drive only issue I had was the forward motion clutch pack isn't the strongest so off road abuse can kill them (I believe the later ones are stronger) went really well backwards! I just found another box. But you can put stronger internals in if you want to!
