Had an issue with the temp gauge recently, was flickering around the place, assumed it was a bad grounding... 5 mile journey today, lost power, pulled over, suspected fuel filter, purged engine, started, huge cloud of white smoke 
so turned it off, then had to drive to the top of the hill, (100meters or less), so i could check oil levels on flat surface, all looked good, turned it over again, loud knocking noise, engine siezes for a second... turned it off, checked coolant.... bone dry, checked rad, pipes, all dry..... time for a new engine i suppose....
