I have a 2001 Defender Extreme with about 200000 on the clock. This is a recent purchase and I am fairly new to the turbo diesel. While driving along towards Coober Pedy (Far North of South Australia) we heard a noise similar to an explosion of air. I thought we had blown a tire. In any case we pulled over to check and there appeared to be nothing amiss so we continued on. The defender seemed fine but I can no longer hear the turbo and we can't get over about 80 kilometres an hour in fifth gear.

Can anyone suggest what might have happened? I have had a look under the bonnet and I can't see too much amiss with any of the hoses. Having checked previous posts I am pretty certain that the turbo hasn't gone as there is no black smoke. There is no one in Coober who has the hardware to look at the ECU (we are talking outback Australia here) so any suggestions would be welcome. Also can anyone tell me if the Defender can be driven? I have to travel about 900 km to get to the nearest town that will have a Landrover mechanic.

sounds like yer might have blow a gasket or burst a hose. or have yer checked that? and is that old scrot with the dog called herpes still hangin around william creek?

Check the intake hosing is securely attached to the high pressure side of the turbo, the intercooler and to the metal piping that leads from the intercooler to the intake manifold.

Check the small bore hosing from the turbo to the wategate is still attached and isn't ruptured.

Next check there isn't a hole in the intercooler - best way to do that is remove it from the car and fill it with water *CAUTION* make sure it's thoroughly dried before you re-fit it! Flushing it with some petrol (gasoline) and allowing to stand fir some hours usually does the trick.

Could be the wastegate is busted - never heard of one popping on a TD5, replacing that last as it's the only one that'll cost you money to diagnose would be the way I'd do it.

Cheers,

Thanks, I am going to get the RAA to look at it today and this will all help. I haven't been to William Creek for some time so I can't answer that one for you. I will have to make a point of going and I'll get back.

Check the pipe after the turbo and before the intercooler, sometimes they delaminate and the inside layer comes out and blocks the intercooler, can only identify when the pipe is in the hand being twisted and bent. otherwise just a turbo pipe which has come off.

Can only echo the other chaps, check turbocharger to intercooler pipe, sometime the split or they serarate internally causing black smoke and loss of power.

I have experienced a similar problem only this week, after renewing the Timing Belt on a Disco 1. I am sure that my Turbocharger was up the creek. A check with the Land Rover sub- agent quoted some 750 Pounds in equivalent currency in this part of the world. After turning to this forum, I discovered that the turbo hose connection to the intercooler, hidden under the cowl, was loose.
Thanks Lads. A great resource.
