Hello everyone, I have been browsing your forum for some time & have decided to register in the hope that someone can help?
My father in law has a 2000 2.5 Diesel Range Rover & has been told he has excessive pressure in the crankcase resulting in oil blow back through the filler cap & gas escape from the crankcase - the mechanic who has it is suggesting a potential piston ring fault as Land Rover do not recognise a crank breather fitted to this model? I have found (with some research) that there is an "Oil seperator" located inside the valve cover that is fitted to some of these models - can anyone here confirm this & if so - is this likely to cause the symptoms displayed?

First, it's not a Td5 it's a 6 cylinder BMW M51 engine. There is indeed and oil seperator and I think a PCV (Pressure Control Valve) in the cam cover, it needs to be cleaned out and maybe replaced. If it blocks it can be very destructive.

I have tried searching the internet for more information on this, I will be replacing it next weekend but cannot find a part number? - does anyone have this information?

You can probably just clean the existing oil seperator, have a look on Island 4 x 4, I think they list the seperator/filter.
 
You will always get air puffing out of the oil filler cap as the engine runs. The pistons are displacing it pretty rapidly as the reciprocate. What you don't want to see is smoke. On your model the oil separator is in the cam cover just a gauze that can be washed. The vent valve is also in there. Needs cleaning out carefully with nothing stronger than Paraffin. Engine works on the principal of running with a partial vacuum in the crank case. Air is sucked out by the turbo via the vent valve. When the engine is stopped the valve closes and locks any nasty stuff in the crank case for environmental reasons. There is no Land rover part number for your vent valve that i am aware of maybe a BMW site may list them. The external vent valve fitted to earlier non EGR cars is available but no good to you.
 
Ok so this weekend I got to remove the old valve, it was completely different to the one ordered :mad: but what I noticed is that someone has drilled a load of holes in the casing of the valve (Presumably because the spring diaphragm has split in it!)
This appears to be the offending item:

Whilst out I also removed & cleaned the wire gauze. Believing that a replacement PCV would not be available on a Sunday, I re-assembled the vehicle with the old part - Presto! No further faults. I will replace the PCV next weekend & post to confirm resolution.
 
Think i told you the external valve was no good to you for your model of car if that's the one you ordered. The external one is pre EGR.

Unfortunately, Land Rover are advising me that this part is only available with the valve cover assembly (£222 + VAT) perhaps that is why the previous owner has drilled holes in it?!

Yes i know that is why i said see if BMW list them. Or if not have a talk with the forum sponsor Emmotts they may let you have one.
 
So, I had a phone call from Land Rover to advise me the Valve cover had arrived with them............ It does not include the PCV! They have been contacting Land Rover UK to try & find the part I need but it appears that it does not actually exist (peculiar that!)

If anyone has any suggestions where to go from here I would be grateful! I have spoken with BMW who cannot locate the part either (even using the numbers on the it!)

Seeing as how all the engines were made and supplied by BMW, there has to be a BMW part number for it. In Germany by law all parts must be available for ten years after production ends. So there must be some about somewhere.

Mybe that's just BMW can't be bothered, I've never found BMW dealerships helpfull.
If mine fails, I shall fit the early rocker cover from my scrapper with the external oil seperator.:)
Does anyone konw if the PCV from the M57 fitted to the L322 is the same?
 
A number of phone calls later & I appear to have drawn a conclusion - Although Land Rover told me the PCV is not in the Valve Cover, a very helpful guy at Keith Gott ordered one in, removed the swirl plate & informed me that the part is there! I of course ordered the valve cover from them, fitted it last weekend & fingers crossed - presto!

Bit of a bugger when you have to get a £200.00 cam cover to get a twenty quid valve.
