My 1999 td5 defender has started to make a ticking noise which starts above 2200 rpm and increases with engine speed when accelerating but vanishes when i ease off the accelerator. It doesn’t seem to do it in 1st or 2nd but only in the higher gears and only when the engine is hot.

I have searched the forum and found references to exhaust leakage around the turbo or internal engine issues.

Anything I can check before having to call the local garage?

Tried changing the oil which hasnt made any difference. I got a recording of the noise today and put it on a video on youtube [nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d25CNNY3eqM"]YouTube - Land rover td5 defender strange engine noise[/nomedia] The rattle/ticking is loudest between 3-7 seconds in on the recording and is still there but harder to hear after changing gear and accelerating still.

I have been under the land rover and cant find anything which is lose or see any holes in the exhaust. Ive changed the manifold gaskets incase it was that blowing but it hasnt helped.

With the windows or the air vents open you cant hear it and it seems to be coming from below the vehicle.

Any ideas on what this noise can be?

I'd look at the exhaust manifold gasket at the back, get someone to start the engine while you have a look, very often you can see a puff od smoke, or at least you will see some smoke damage.

Rob.

Ive replaced the manifold gaskets and it still makes the noise.

Finsihed changing them today now the rain has finally stopped and still no change!
