For the past month or so my 110 td5 is having tremendous difficulty starting.

It is fitted with an "autowatch" alarm that has an engine immobiliser.

Here are the symptoms...

The battery died about 1 month ago, it took a jump, then when driving home I stopped for a cup of coffee (two hours later) and couldn't get it to start. The fuel pump was kicking in, but the starter was not going on or clicking. I thought it was still the dead battery, I got a jump and it started after a few tries.

I assumed at this point that the battery was bad. It has been starting intermittently since this point, but I have not driven and had kept the battery on the charger for 3 days. I had just started it up to make sure it was ok and try to diagnose the problem.

My fuel pump is whistling and needs to be replaced, so I am waiting for it to come in before I start using the truck. I am not sure this is relevant because I can hear it turning on.

Today I started it to move it around, shut it off, then went to restart a minute later and it would not start. I brought the battery to be tested and it is fine.

I have come to the assumption that it is either a faulty aftermarket alarm, starter relay or the starter. From my understanding, if I can hear the fuel pump turn on the engine should at least start to turn over.

The alarm, however, is making the noise to indicate it is disengaging and the light is flashing accordingly. The brain on the alarm could be bad and I will try bypassing the alarm tomorrow.

Any help would be greatly appreciated because I would like to get it on the road again this week and this is really starting to drive me nuts.

Anyone?

Just a follow-up, I can drive for about 20minutes and it goes and dies, from what I think is the bad pump.

When I go to start it the pump kicks in but the starter is not engaging.

I am thinking it is either the ignition switch or the AS10 in addition to the bad pump.

The as10 is making a clicking noise with the headlights on so I know it is bad. Is there some type of timer on the AS10 that would cause the engine to shut off after about 20 minutes?

I know the AS10 is bad and I also know I need a new pump..I just don't know what is causing what problem and if there could be something else coming into play.

Summary, td5 starts intermittently, when it drives the engine dies after 20 minutes...at that point I can't get it to turn on. the symptoms are that of my first post from then on.

Put a 12v light to the starter solonoid wire and go to start does it shine bright if so you have your feed and a faulty starter.

Do make sure the engine earths are clean remove and clean up or make new cables.

I have had the same sort of problems in the past with my TD5.

I started to have difficulty starting in the mornings, with more noise from the fuel pump than normal. It would start and about 10mins later it would cut out and then not restart. However I was able to restart it after waiting another 10mins or so and could get it to restart. Then back into the same cycle....

I looked at the pump as the issue, becaues of the noise. However, after some checking online I went for changing the Copper Washers and Seals on the injectors first. That fixed my problem not sure if that would work for you.

td5 starter solenoid contacts are known problem and ebay do repair kit

Gurgling and cutting out tend to in the majority of cases injector washers and O rings

fuel pumps do fail and regulators do leak- but the vast majority of problems seem to be

oil in injector loom buy a new one and your find oil in ecu plug that needs cleaning with spray brake cleaner or electrical contact cleaner
injector washers and o rings

Thank you going to test the starter today.

Has anyone ever heard of the as10 causing a td5 to turn off? There is a clicking noise out of there so I have to replace it anyway. Is this even a possibility or just a coincidence?

It takes about 10-15 minutes for the truck to start again after it dies. It needs replacing anyway so have ordered one...but I will go down the list of everything above and let you guys know.

Thank you very much.
