Hi all, any ideas why it won't start? Checked for fault codes with a generic tester, none,
We have diesel, had gone through purge process and have black smoke on cranking, sounds like one or two cylinders firing, good crank speed , etc but that's all....
It had been running fine and was driving ok, petered out according to wife like it was out of fuel but a bit to quick, The injector wiring harness was changed 3 years ago ...
Only thing I noticed recently that it would idle at 1000 instead of 800, sometimes it would drop to 800 after tapping the throttle , being jobless just now it'd be great if anyone can point me in some sensible test directions without having to resort to the , the dddd dealer ;) .
If you can ...thanks..Michael

Can you hear the fuel pump in the diesel tank running?
One test would be to remove the fuel filter (in the right hand rear wheel arch) and see if fuel is being pumped through from the tank

What generic tester did you use? i'll be the first to say that there are only a select few readers that are properly compatible with a td5 :) Others likely wont give you anything useful

The scanner is a u480 obd11/eobd11 memo scanner. From the book it suggests that around 2004 many eu light diesels had to be obd11 compliant as my wonderful when it works car is 2003 , I wonder if this late model is ..wonder I said, I'm allowed to wonder ... what do u think I'm in cloud cuckoo land and need to find someone with a what ? Code reader ? Cheers .

Ref the code reader, I am sure @brian47 Oooops, or even @biggeeeee , is already writing the reply, but chance is you are unlucky with that one.

Ref the Auto, you mentioned Can bus, but it is worth making sure others know about it being an Auto, I am not au fait with them, only thing I would ask is there anything strange on the dash ?

Cheers

Who taketh my name in vain?

Yes, you are correct, the diesel Discovery did not become fully OBDII compatible until mid 2004 with the release of the Discovery 3. Petrol Discos were compatible a few years earlier.
Most Disco owners who do have a code reader will tell you to use either Nanocom, Hawkeye, Lynx or Testbook. With the exception of the Testbook, these days they're very similar in capability and price; a couple of hundred GBP. Testbook is the main dealer's diagnostic equipment so that's lots and lots of pounds! Even though there's an OBDII type socket under the dash, the protocols weren't compatible.
You might be lucky and find a generic code reader that will give you some results, but to be honest, how do you know if it's even telling the truth? And it'll probably only partly read the engine ECU and won't even communicate with any of the other ECUs on the Disco 2.
With regards to CAN-BUS, I don't think there's much, if any canbus connected kit on the Disco 2, at least, I've not come across any. I think that that came in on the Disco 3 too. Even in the area of the auto gearbox, it think it's just ordinary switching with static electrical loads, nothing fancy.
