Hi all, I have a '02 TD4 with 67K on the clock with a problem possibly turbo related.
The engine starts and runs fine and in neutral sounds mint with no problems but under load at around 2000+ RPM a noise which basically sounds like wind noise or high pressure air escaping seems to be coming from the off side of the engine. If i run the engine underload then take it out of gear and rev on the noise stops immediately!
I know absolutely nothing about deisel engines (I'm a Lambretta man) but I've just noticed the noise so it is very recent. The car seems to be pulling as usual but the noise is worrying. Any clues or experience of this.:(

would say from experience you are looking for a split in one of the intercooler hoses. do a search for "td4 intercooler hose" and you'll find an abundance of threads about the very subject. First one to check though would be the long one running across the front of the top of the engine, especially where it rubs on the engine cover just above the dipstick. usually wear through where it rubs.

when you change it, cut a piece of the old hose and slit it along its length, then put it over the top of the new hose where the old one rubbed, and secure it with a couple of cable ties.

or could be the elbow on the rhs of the top of the engine, but nothing for this to rub on, but mine did go too.

good luck

Funnily enough my hose split on the M6 yesterday. It was the short right angled hose on the top of the engine. It split on the inside of the bend along it's length. I stopped at B&Q and did a quick repair with gaffer tape, and then bought and fitted a replacement last night for just under a tenner.

Damn thing came half off the spigot afterwards though so had to do it again. Make sure you clean the oil properly off the spigots before fitting the new one methinks!

Symptoms of the split hose were the car feeling like it had no turbo (which effectively it didn't seeing as the air was leaking out of the hose). It got worse and worse on the motorway, and by the time I found a B&Q for a quick fix it was blowing black smoke out the back. All fixed now though, am expecting the longer hose along the top to go next !

Spot on Optimus, opened the bonnet, quick shifty around and there it was, a large split on one of the hoses staring conveniently up at me.
Huge relief and a big thanks, you fellas really know your onions.
Cheers.
Michael.

short elbow on right hand side of engine land rover part no WAP000080 'bout £7
long hose across top front of engine land rover part no PNH000020 'bout £19 (but this could vary depending on the version of engine you have as there are two variants, one has an additional small branch) best to quote engine number at dealer, or even better take it with you

Wanted to thank all of you who posted on this topic. Was off to Scotland 2 weeks ago in my 53 TD4 and expereinced the same symptoms (loss of power, smoke and whistling noise) as I ascended Shap ! For some reason this thread popped into my head and I said to the wife "this can't be what I'm thinking it might be, but lets look anyway'

Stopped off at Penrith Halfords and unhooked the Intercooler hose to find a 2inch split. Phew ! Bought some gaffer tape, asked the Halfords guy for one of those alcho-wipes and cleaed up the hose. Added the gaffer tape and bingo ! Lasted another 5oomiles round Scotland and back.

Bought new hose on return to Brum and all is well.

Thanks again guys, you saved my holiday !
