Freelander 1 td4 Tailgate U/S

Have stopped the smoking & now running OK but went to put the toolbox in & the bloody thing clicks
but will not open. How can the door lock be accessed to fix or replace? there must be a way to in to the
rear of the tailgate. Any ideas boys.

Yes, comes down a bit, not as far as normal, can lower it all the way with the inside switch.

No, had they same problem in a previous one I owned & had to get British Offroad to fix, cost was
AUD $300, didn't explain how they did it other than it was a bit of b---- to do it! I posted for information
as I don't think that this is not a common problem with this vehicle.

Try pushing against the door while operating the switch. It sounds like the mechanism is jammed so hopefully it's something jamming the door tight. If not then a replacement mechanism is needed. I've bought them a couple of times from ebay for a fraction of new so it's worth chancing it.

When you say “clicking” is it the noise of the microswitch or the little latch servo operating? The first is a simple click, the second a sort of “bzzt”. Since the window drops, I’m guessing it’s the second. You’ll have to try, as Alibro says, pushing and pulling and lifting while operating the handle.

A new lock servo may be in order, and the door might have dropped, needing adjustment.

Silly dropping window, servo latch instead of reliable mechanical latch, microswitch, handle mount that rusts, lock cylinder that stops working, ally stop light that corrodes and looks horrible - whoever designed the Freelander tailgate should be beaten with a sh!tty stick.

I agree with Guineafowl21 totally but the dilemma still exists, How do I get the bloody thing to open to remove the switch,
that is the crux of the problem.

It's an obvious ploy that, once you get the car running properly, you have to fix the windows that stop working, the sunroof that won't open but leaks when it rains and figure out how to open and fix the rear door......all designed to keep you off the street corners at night...GENIUS!!

You have to remove the door trim so you can get at the actuator. You can then release it manually from the inside. Sometimes the link rod fails, so the latch isn't moved by the actuator.

I haven't had to take the door trim off with the door closed yet but it will probably happen sometime. Normally you remove 4 screws from the bottom then prise it off from the bottom first and it hooks on at the top. In your case you'll need to unhook the top first, then pull it away as best you can to get access to the latch.
There have been many threads here on this topic before so a search should find plenty more advice.
