Hi All,

I am going to change the fuel filter and pump in the wheel arch.

Do I need to purge the fuel system after fitting the new one?
If so how do I purge, just like the disco, pressing the accelerator 5 times?

No, I believe the system is self bleeding. Have read as much on other threads on this site recently as I have to change my own fairly soon. It seems like the best way is to put the ignition in position 2 and you should hear the pump at the rear wheel humming for 20/30 seconds. Do this 2/3 times before attempting to start it.

On this topic, I was thinking of filling the filter with kerosene or a treatment in order to give the injectors a good clean. Would it be better to do this with the old filter first and then fit the new or fill the new filter?

As @freelance says, do not put cleaner in the old filter. If you want to clean your fuel system try this. Not everyone will agree, but it works. Put new filter on, add 5L of biodiesel per fill up for about 3 months (or 500 miles) replace filter again. You will have a lovely clean fuel system. Biodiesel is not recommended for td4's, but at this mix for a short period of time it's OK. Mike

What's in biodiesel that it would actually clean out the fuel system?

I was only thinking of using kerosene as I have it in the central heating burner and I've read that many of the diesel treatment products are more or less kerosene anyway.

Whatever I do, I will avoid putting anything in the old filter anyway, thanks! xD

Recycled veg oil mainly, a dash of paraffin or kerosene to cut it. I ran the td4 on it neat for about 6 months a few years back, but the money I saved was spent on replacing the filter every 3 months and there was a significant drop in power. But it did take all the crud out of the tank and fuel lines, not sure why, someone might know. I now use a good quality fuel (texaco mainly) and Millers diesel power (which I've used for years). I always think, why use a one shot cleaner, then let it all get dirty again. Best to use one thing all the time to stop the muck. Millers contains cleaners and cetane(helps the diesel burn better, YouTube it) Others will disagree, saying it's snake oil, but 132000 miles in, and I'm still on my original injectors! Mike

Cheers Mike, after hours of being baffled why it was not pumping diesel I finally found out that I had left one of the protection caps on the fuel pump. Hahaha what a noob mistake to make.

Still can't believe that I got the fuel hose over it!! That cost me some hours. Hahaha

You mean original l thick vegetable oil thinned with kerosene? Not actual finished biodiesel? I don't think I'd risk putting that in it tbh.

Cetane/diesel burning improver reminds me of Dipetane. It's produced here in Ireland and is what everyone uses for getting both petrol and diesels through the emissions test. I've heard it referred to as snake oil here alright but a half a litre of the stuff in a qtr tank of fuel never fails get a pass from my experience. I did see on the bottle that as well as a fuel additive it can be put in the filter to give the system a good initial clean out and from there on, putting some in every tank does help reduce carbon buildup.

Others here have said kerosene does largely the same thing though.
