I knew I shouldnt have bragged how reliable my 05 Freelander TD4 was last week the bloody thing wouldnt start yesterday,I was visiting a mate and after about an hour went to drive home ,the engine turned over ok but would not start,Ive had no problems with starting before, went back about half an hour later and it started, turned off the engine and it wouldnt start again eventually got it going but the pump under the wheel arch is constantly running(I think it should stop when the system is up to pressure)when I accelerate the engine management light comes on and goes off if I ease up.Anyone got any ideas please (No I am not going to burn it:))

sounds like a faulty injector leaking back. Pressure has to be equal across all 4 injectors before it fires, so if one is leaking back it won't start. check by carrying out a leak off test.

could also be the cam position sensor on top of the engine, but this usually causes hot starting issues.

good luck

I'm not sure about the injector as i havent had problems with mine.

Trick learned from AA man :

When i won;t start, trun the ingition on, but don;t start the car. You;ll hear the fuel pump(s) running. Leave it on for about 10 seconds.

Repeat about 5 times, but dont start the car. What you are doing is building presure in the fuel system.

On the sixth attempt try and start the car and see if it starts. If it does then you prolly have a duff fuel pump.

Hope it helps

Dave

the pumps [low pressure both work together] and a good test is ign on [dont start] pmps shuld run but after bout 10-20 seconds should stop. . . . .if not one or both pmps have a problem or youve a fuel leak :)

The pump under the wheel arch runs continually ,I cant see any fuel leaks:)
could be a blocked filter. . . . but my money is the pmp but could be the tank one. . . . .this is the logic of fault finding dissconect last output pipe [shuld **** out doozle with ign on .no foam] if poor take off i/p pipe [same test] if good then 2nd pmp or filter. . . .if bad the 1st pmp u/s [in tank] easy int it :) :) :) hope this helps yer

Yours doesn't have an in-tank pump so it isn't that...

Do an injector leak off test, it costs nothing and will help the diagnosis.

Chasers right, you have a 2005 td4 so your fuel pump unit is under the wheel arch, the fuel pump unit is only in the tank on td4's upto 2003.

Theres a fuel injection pump is in the engine compartment.

It was the fuel pump ,fitted a new pump and filter today (wet n windy up ere in the hills) everything seems ok:) and after 03 td4s only have one fuel pump thanks for the advice:D:D
