Hi all.

I would be grateful for some guidance here, my 2003 Freelander TD4 has developed a problem. When I accellerate I can hear the turbo spinning up like it is succking in air, the engine is down on power on accelleration also. When I drive, it gets to around 2000rpm and gives a slight hesitation and pushes out black smoke from the exhaust, hard accelleration isn't productive and loads of black smoke comes out of the exhaust. Fuel economy is unaffected and apart from the slower accelleration, it drives fine in the cruise apart from the slight kick. I noticed that there was no filter in the Crankcase Breather on the Cam Cover (not sure why, must have been like that when I got it in March). I wonder if it could be the EGR Valve and would welcome any more ideas. There is no rattle or other strange noises from the Turbo. Many thanks

Hi. I have had a look and all i could really find was that the jubilee clip olding the air feed to the turbo was loose. I tightened it up but it made no difference. I couldn't locate any intercooler hoses, could anyone tell me where to locate them? Cheers. "Experience is something that you don't get until just after you need it!"

the large hose at the top front of the engine usually rubs through on a screw head underneath.........

What is your oil consumption like? With no separator (filter) in the crankcase depression limiter you will have been drawing in oil from the engine instead of returning it to the sump. Youe EGR valve, manifold and associated plumbing will be in a gooey state. Get the newer centrifrugal type separator from a BMW dealer (Type M47 engine) for ~£20.
The hissing /whistling will be air escaping from one of the intercooler pipes. There are three pipes approximately 60mm diameter, how can you not find them? One runs from the turbo over the top of the gearbox (under the EGRfeed pipe and valve) to the RHS of the radiator/intercooler. Then there are two elbows at either end of the manifold. If any of these are split or have a loose clip there will be a black greasy deposit around.

Hi. As I do lots of miles I do check the oil weekly and so far it hasn't used a single drop since the last service in March, around 9k miles ago. I did check the pipework on the top of the engine but found no splits or loose clips. I will get under it today and check the lower pipe from the turbo over the gearbox. I strongly suspect that a previous owner may have changed the engine as there are loose/missing clips everywhere, pipework running all over in apparently randome places and the long small vacuum hose (10mm O/D) running from the turbo valve to the vacuum chamber ( a sort of plastic cylinder which also has a small pipe to the egr valve) in the gearbox side of the engine bay is just thrown in the back of the compartment loose. I am going to get the new seperator today and will install it. Thank you all very much for your great advice, I really appreciate it, being a L/R virgin! Once I have had another look, I will post the (hopefully successful) results.

Hi all. I got the upper left intercooler hose off completely today and exactly as you all predicted it has a hole in. I duly replaced it with a new one from L/R and put in the new separator and the horrid noise is now gone! Power is back to normal, though at higher revs I still get a good bit of black smoke. I put this down to all the goo resulting from the bust hose and lack of separator. I dropped a tankfull of fuel in with some fuel system cleaner so hopefully that will clear the smoke. Is it possible there is another problem though......Thanks for your help folks, hope I can return the favour sometime.

It's a good idea to cut a piece of the old hose and wrap it around the new one at the point where it rubs and secure with cable ties.

I don't think I'd be too concerned about the smoke just yet. See if a bit of hard driving will clear it out.

Thanks Chaser, I will do as you suggest. I will also give it a decent run up and down the motorway in a week or so. I do have a last question.....do you know where I could get an updated CD for the Sat Nav as L/R want well over £100 and I can get a Tom Tom for that! If I can get one cheaper, i'd like to keep using the in built system in the radio. Many thanks for the great advice.

You might find a copied nav cd if you try google search. To be honest I think you might be better off with a Tom Tom, the built in system doesn't have great functionality from what i hear.

After reading about a couple of problems with that specific pipe (left on top of the engine) I did, as a precautionary measure, fix a piece of flat rubber, fixed it with a cabletie, just over the screw below the pipe. Hope it will do it's job correctly.

Chaser sold your TD4 for Touareg?

Chaser sold your TD4 for Touareg?

Indeed, awesome car. I'm a fan of VW/Audi as well as Landrover. The mrs loves the Touareg more than the kids! I miss having a Td4 though and still look at autotrader etc. so could get another someday if the price was right.

You can have my bloody TD4! Although there is now no whistling noises and no black smoke, there is still a slight lack of power/boost. Sometimes it seems fine, other times it feels as though there is no boost going on.....it usually gives enough to push you back in the seat just a little, but at present it just seems to lazily accellerate with no urgency......any ideas folks? Any suggestions greatfully received!
