Hi all I have a 2003 freelander TD4 sport but over the last few weeks the heater has got very poor and the temp gauge is not raising like normal. It is not loosing any water and there is no leaks that I can see. This sounds like a thermostat problem to me but is this something that gives trouble on this model? If it is can anyone tell me where it is on the engine and is it easy to fit?
Many thanks Mark

Have you changed the antifreeze recently?

If so you may not have managed to bleed all the air out of the system.

There's a knack to it - not explained properly in the Haynes manual.

Singvogel.

Sounds very much like the thermostat is stuck open, its on the side of the engine on the water pump, if you look down by the belts you'll see it, with the hose coming off, easy to fit!? Not impossible but not that friendly, remember if the engine was still in the BMW it would be on the front end..wouldn't say they're anymore trouble on this than anything else..
Hopefully someone on here has some tips, I found it easier if you can get underneath as well, to get to the coolant pipes on the rear of the engine.

i found that by haveing the engine undone ie the engine mounts the engine could be leavered over a bit to the passenger side and that helped but still a pig of a job and i do not know where its me or my imagination but the engine in the later one like the face lift one seems to have a bit more room but then my mind plays up at my age

Haven't looked under the hood of a pre-facelift, but there is just room to get your hands in there as long as they're not big maulers, I think you just need to be able to get round it well, through the wheelarch and round the back of the engine, do-able but a pain in the arse, mine went at around 75k

Hi the best way is through the wheel arch ,remove the plastic cover in the wheel arch , and if you can use a 3/8 ratchet socket set instead of 1/2 kit,as this gives a bigger working space, just be sure things a clean before re-assy

I would also hope he's fixed it, from the post date. but some else trying to find an answer to the same problem, that, might of only occurred this year (like mine)

It's always good for someone with a new outlook on how to do a job an easier way and add it to an existing thread.
