Just fitted new cables ,still crap!
new shoes and a grease is next on list
although there is plenty of meat left on the originals ,
the local garage suggests new springs as well (might as well while I've got it apart)
if it stays dry for a bit I will get out on the driveway this weekend

you need to adjust the shoes as well so that they are first gripping the drum then back them of slightly so they do not catch. hope this helps

mine failed mot last yr because of hb

pads where fine and all cables ,adjusters etc working fine ,i tried everything !!!!

only thing it could be left was the drums them selves!!!! they are old and def near the end of there life and had a big lip,i ground that back and still the hb was pooo

so before buying new drums i swopped them over ie left to right and versa vice

and since then ive had a hand break that i could if needed do hand break turns with !!!!!

so i no mine needs new drums really as this was just a quick fix so i could get my mot lol

new drums still need to be ordered as my mot was 5 mnths ago :-( im a bad man i better get this sorted

Hi. I know this thread is a bit old but I thought I would post anyway in case someone like me comes across it. I replaced shoes, springs, drums and handbrake cables just before my MOT and it failed on the park brake efficiency. I took it apart, lightly greased the moving parts and backplate, checked the auto adjusters were working and re adjusted everything and roughed up the shoes and drums with emery cloth. Tested my park brake and it worked once and then was ****e again. After a lot of messing around I decided to remove the britpart cables I had fitted (for the td4 later chassis numbers) and sprung for some pages ones from Euro car parts. Turns out the the britpart cables, even though they seem to move freely, somehow get jammed inside the drum. Tested a few times with the paid cables and thought I was going to rip my rear wheels/diff off. So if anyone puts new cables on and after using once or twice finds that the lever is hard to pull and the handbrake is ****e, it's worth checking the cables and definitely not fitting britpart ones.
