Sounds like this happened to my 2005 TD4 today also on the M6 with 100 miles still to travel. Piles of black smoke at around 70mph but would dissapear once the speed was up to 80 but the engine did lack any zip and lost power on gradients. There also was the sound of escaping air from behind the dashboard/bulkhead which increased/deacreased with engine speed and now and again sounded like the engine was pinking suddenly and briefly at 2500 rpm. It did seem to start very gradually wher the engine would loose power and then gain power whilst the foot pedal was held constant, like a switch cutting in and out. Will check the bits as previously mentioned tomorrow.
Anything else worth looking at?
