TD4 fuel pump issue

Evening all,
I have a 2002 TD4 Freelander that will sometimes turnover but refuse to start. Seems to be a problem with the fuel pump as wiggling the intake hose on top of the pump prompts this into action. Has anyone experienced this before and if so is it an intermitment problem or something I need to get a mechanic to look at? Would rather not spend any money on the vehicle at this time but equally I don't want to be caught out in the middle of nowhere.

Yes, fuel pump failure is likely and has been covered on this forum regularly - try the search facility for more info.

We replaced both fuel pumps on our 2002 TD4 a year or two ago, but used cheap Britpart items.

One failed again thus summer, so we have mow replaced both with genuine Land Rover parts.

You obviously have an early TD4 with the two-fuel-pump arrangement, one in the tank and the other in the engine bay, and it it the engine bay pump that is giving the problem. These small diameter pumps seem to have a limited life and give trouble after 60k miles or so. They seem to have low torque and suffer from starting difficulties, once started they appear to run ok. Giving the filter/pump assembly a tap with the side of the hand seems to get them going, and this is what you are doing by wiggling the pipes. Thats not a good practice for the long term security of the connections.

A new pump is the only real solution, but beware cheap offerings on the internet as there have been many reports of poor performance. Best to get the proper thing. There are plenty of posts if you search on fuel pump or poor/none starting.
