TD4 Fuel Problem MIL light comes on

What a result - bang on!!

With weird faults, getting some test gear and methodical diagnosis is the only sure fire way. I suspect if a main dealer was looking at this following the diagnostic route in their manuals they would have replaced everything except the radio by now!

You can probably sell the test kit of ebay for nearly what you paid and the fix cost you £0 in parts!

You should feel rightly chuffed with yourself.
 
Well done bigtwig, you are a credit to this forum so glad you found the fault, such a tricky little fault to find too, and now we know 40psi is lp pressure , on my next service i will do a fuel flow test to get some some idea for expected flow rates,(unless anyone already has this info ?) as not many people will have pressure gauges, and in reality your blockage should have given you full pressure, but not the amount of fuel that was required
 
Thanks for the comments fellas. Hope the story and info/pics might help another Hippo owner at some point. Incidentally, I'll keep the pressure test kit, I like to have the right tools on the shelf, and this kit's a keeper. Don't want to temp fate, but the landie is now going better than ever before, and as the previous owner had fitted a HP performance box, it makes me wonder if it's ever been "right".. Now that it's sorted, reintroducing the Pro Bitz box makes it quite nippy really.

I have had the same issue - It turns out the Low Pressure Sensor has developed a fault. There appears to be a bit of a 10 year MTBF rate on these! According to my local LR dealer .. not sold any in years but started selling on a month now!!!

the Low Pressure Fuel Sensor part number proved illusive for some reason with it being a LR OEM part only (at the moment at least)...

For Ref the part number is WKW000081

I have ordered one today and will post a photo before I fit it tomorrow - for future ref...

So just to complete the story, I tried to check the regulator wiring through to the ECU but couldn't find the wires. There was 12V and 3V on each of the regulator pins with ignition on, which I now know must be OK.
I couldn't restrict the flow on the return pipe to 'up' the pressure.
I did use a foot pump to blast back any crud into the tank prior to the rear pump/filter/sedimentor, but I don't think that was at fault. Then I found it. One of the plastic pipes that feeds the input to LP pump has a 2" extra of rubber pipe that gives it some extra flex. With the pump energised, if I squeezed this pipe, the note changed dramatically. When I removed one end, I looked inside to find.... some plastic that had almost blocked the pipe, just letting a small flow through! I thought it may have been a protective end cap from one of the filters or pumps that I've tried, but they were hard PVC and would not have fitted even if I tried to force it!
You can see this in the attached pics. I can only guess this has come from the tank, or was a pipe strengthening part that helps a joint. Anyway, snout nosed pliers removed it, all back together and.... 40+ psi of pressure with ignition on and 30 to 42 psi with engine running and revving.
And yes, it now revs fully and no MIL light!!!
I hope this story helps others, and I must say having the pressure meter helped, and now knowing the correct ball park fuel pressures would help.

Thanks bigtwig,my F1 has the same problem. Did you ever find the part number for the LP fuel pressure sensor .When I unplug mine, shes back to full power .I did check for blocked pipe but nothing so far, so IM hoping a new sensor will do the trick.
 
The LR part number is WKW000081described as HOSE - FUEL FEED WITH SENSOR
