Sometime this year when it stops raining I plan to change the fuel filter. It is the one place in the rear wheel arch. The Haynes manual make it out it is like a walk in the park but from I can recall from reading here the words pig, bastid along with more colourful words sounds like it is not so straight forward. Have I got to take off the wheel and wheel arch liner first. And once the filter housing is able to be got at is there anything else to be aware of. I have the landy now for 4 years and I don't know when it was last done. Marty

Yes - it's a sod-awful dirty job as it's a stupid place to locate a service item.

You do need to remove the wheel but there is ample room to drop the holder just by folding the inner liner back a little bit.

You will encounter rusty bolts and the earth connection may well be rusted through and you will have a loose wire hanging that needs a new terminal.

You will probably spill a cupful or so of fuel so best to have a sheet of cardboard or similar and a bowl to catch the spill.

The filter in theory can be slid out of the holder on the car, but the chances are almost 100% that it will be stuck in situ beside the pump.

Best to remove the whole pump & filter assembly to the work-bench where it can be cleaned and disassembled more easily.

Lightly grease the outside of the new filter before inserting it in the carrier, to make future changes easier.

After it's all back together again you need to turn the key to position 1 and listen for the pump running and filling the filter. Lots of gurgling noises. After a minute or two, turn off, wait a bit, and try again. After 2 or 3 goes you could try starting the engine. It's designed to be self-bleeding but it may well be a bit rough and even stall the first time. Just wait a bit and then re-do the position 1 trick to get rid of more air in the lines.

Enjoy -----and thank the sadistic 'design engineer' who located the filter under the wheel-arch. :(

Thanks for the reply. The possible rusted earth terminal can you make a new one or is it a trip to land rover for a new one. Marty

As far as I can remember the hanging wire had a spade terminal on it and it was the 'male' tag that had corroded off the holder.

An easy fix - just pop-riveted a new tag on the sleeve.

It's not so important on a diesel - it's a safety earth wire in case of a spark I think.

Great info again as usual Singvogel, cheers.

Well that was a pig of a job. Got the whole thing off and a bracket just fell off. The rivets had perished so riveted it back on now for the filter itself as stated it was tight and I mean tight so tight I had to fix the filter housing to the work bench. Then with a hammer and a small breaker bar tap the filter out. Once out cleaned the filter tube and greased it, did it slide back in, no had to get a piece of wood and tap it in. Cleaned it all up and fixed it all back turned the key, lots of gurgling started the landy. No problem there but it did not sort the misfire I have at 2-2500 revs. So it is probably injectors it has done about 120k. Still pulls ok though. I think I just have to take it to the 4x4 garage. Thanks for the info singvogel being prewarned helped with the awkwardness of it. Marty.
