TD4 Engine knock and black smoke

Thanks for the replies.

Sorry, should have mentioned in my earlier post, that the diesel mechanic said that the noise definitely didnt sound like tappets. He thought the noise was more mid engine, not big ends, maybe a piston pin.

The noise can be heard when you drive the car with all the windows closed. I dont have enough experience to be sure, but I thought tappets were fairly quiet and can't always be heard inside the car.

Currently planning on a replacement engine, as the cost to get the engine stripped means it isnt viable. Taking the engine apart I could do, but getting it back together and working is probably beyond what i can do and I don't have the cam alignment tools. Had a good read of the BMW TIS for this engine on the web last night. It looks rather tricky.

Beginning to sound like crank to me. Slightest movement allows valve piston contact as their very close anyway. You could remove the sump etc and check, maybe you could be lucky and just replace bearing shells.

Did you ever solve this knock issue? Mine has no smoke problems but has a very 'diesely' knock but only sometimes. I have eliminated cheap fuel by not using it and just as I think all is quiet, I can turn off and on again and here we go again ! I could believe it was a tappet - but this too sounds mid engine - equally loud underneath and my mechanics stethoscope can't pin point it.
All else seems well, just saw this thread and thought it was worth an ask............

Mine suffers from knock in one cylinder. I ignore it is I've put it down to slight oil contamination, from a seeping guide seal.

Hi. Just a quick question on this subject. I have a knocking noise coming from the top, left hand side of the engine on my 02 plate TD4. Would the crankshaft damper cause a knocking noise? I thought it would sound more like a bearing rumble if it was the crankshaft damper? The noise increases and decreases with the engine and stays at the same loudness. I don't think its a tappet as the noise seems too loud and more of a knock. I need to replace the rocker cover gasket as that is leaking so will be looking at the camshaft. While i have the cover of what things should i be looking at? Thanks in advance for any help.
