Hi there.
I am new to the forum and new to my freelander.
2004 model with 2.0 BMW engine.
Great 4X4 and am enjoying it.
But ..... after driving down the mountain roads I always get a very bad and noticeable "half burnt diesel" smell. Friends have got out the car and made comments like " I wouldn't drive that any further if I were you!" etc etc
What on earth could it be? otherwise she is fine.

Any help and advice would be very welcome

Mine used to smell a bit..sort of dirty smell all the time. I bought an aircon sanitizer for about 5 or 6 quid and sprayed it through all the vents and where the pollen filter is housed..now smells much better

could be a leaking exhaust manifold gasket. . . .

Hi guys

Thanks for the input..... Good advice for the aircon system ( which I will do asap) but this is coming from outside and below.
When the back window is down it invades the cabin whilst driving.
I have bought and paid for the Freelander but have refused to take possession until this is sorted....... I want to get on and drive it. Here in Tenerife it is a good 4x4 to have.

Driving on the motorway at 60 mph for an hour and no smell of fuel

But as soon as I ask the engine to work hard ie up hills or even down hills it seems that the engine is not burning all the fuel.... and the smell is very strong....enough for passengers to remark on it.

The clutch does not seem to be slipping! (Although it has done 170,000 miles)
Also going up hills (20%gradient)...I have to thrash it in second and then when I put it in third it just does not have the pull unless I can catch third at about 2500 revs!

Engine revs freely and pulls well on the flat.

Do not think it is the brakes... which was my first thought.

I am pretty certain that it is putting too much diesel in.... somehow.

I am going to check out the air breather/management system ...maf etc

Any further ideas?

Thanks in anticipation
