hi im new here and hear you are the best place for land rover help and info. ive a 2001 td4 freelander, auto. under med to hard acceleration gear changes slip in 4th and 5th gears. this has only just started happening possibly since cold weather has set in. someone told me the fluid leval may be low in the box but i cant find anyware in the handbook mentioning it. and someone told me you have to be an expert in the black arts to work out how to get fluid into it. any ideas or help would be appreaceated as im supposed to be off to norway in it next month....

I'm no mechanic but auto gearboxes are normally topped up through the dipstick neck.
I also had this problem years ago with a ford auto, and was told the "bands" needed adjusting, problem was worst when g/box was cold.

Hi,
I have this problem with my V6 auto. Slips into 4th and 5th under hard acceleration and screams its nuts off before engaging properly. I too was told to check the oil level in the gearbox. I understand there is a filler plug (similar to a sump plug) in the top some where and an overflow plug which needs to be removed. You keep filling until oil floods through the overflow, all over your drive no doubt ;) Seems a primitive method to me. I'm going to check mine when/if I get it back.

thanks for the advice ill be checking the levals on mine tonight borrowing a full lift ramp for a few hours at mates garage unit, will post back with results when fluid checks complete next problem fluid type. local lr dealer says dont worry about special fluid (n402 no ones heard of it), just use dextron 2 he said... nah ive ordered the right stuff... fingers crossed...

Car will need to be level ground, not up on ramps. You'll get a false level if the front is up in the air. I'm assuming you can mix different types of transmission fluid/oil?
What's the worst that could happen? Your gearbox will brake down, not like you NEED it is it !!!

why do cars always play up when its snowing, i feel like john cleese when i have to work on cars these days, i used to enjoy gettin the spanners out... im gettin old... ha mutter mutter moan...

Cars have changed though, they're no longer simple to work on. All I do now is oil changes or brake pads. Wouldn't dream of grinding new valves in or changing a clutch :( Yes, we're getting old Cartman !!

:) :) :) conclusion 2 litres down on fluide all back to normal now vehicle has done 126'000 miles i'd say the leval plug had never been out, what do we pay these guys for at garages for so called services. any how leval plug was hard to find(haynes manual as useful as trying to read french toast) any ideas on where fluid went no leaks on box hoses or cooler...anyway thanks to all for help, ideas, and advice...cartman...:) :)

So cartmen, where was this overflow plug and filler plug? Any chance of a photo or detailed description? I must do mine now. What fluid did you use in the end? Dextron 2 maybe?

Cartmen, now that's what I call a helpfull post :D Bloody awesome mate.
I'm going to sort my gearbox out when the Freelander comes home.
Thanks again for that break down of the job.

Hang on! Where did Cartmens post go? The post that described how to check and fill the oil in the auto gearbox? I was about to read it and go and check/fill my oil :(
Bring it back please !!

Hi Mark sorry i removed it myself, had a repeat performence of slipping in 4th then lost 4th completley 3 days after posting, im gutted it cost me £1917.05 for replacement box this week. if you want i can re post proceedure for fluid leval checking but ill do it under another thread, cause it didnt solve this problem. apparently a piston cracks in the gearbox causing low pressure to a clutch, the clutch slips contaminates the oil, and pretty soon its all over, oh theres a s/h box from a v6 on ebay in birmingham if you need it (hope you dont) regards cartman690...:( http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Freelander-2000-Model-V6-Auto-Gear-Box_W0QQitemZ4615648732QQcategoryZ10400QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Hi Cartmen,
Sorry to hear about your gearbox. I hope mine isn't going the same way as I've only just got her back after the head gaskets needed replacing, cost £1600 but the warranty company took care of £525 :(
If you could put a thread on for checking the level of oil that would be great as It may need doing. Lets hope that's all it takes.
Cheers
