Hi all.

Does anyone know where I can get hold of a second hand air con pump/compressor for 2004 Freelander td4?

I don't know if I trust eBay and thought the lovely peeps on here may know :clap2:

I have just had my aircon gassed up here in France, it tested No Leaks but when charged up and switched it on there was a horrible clanking noise coming from the pump, so they took back the gas and sent me on my way with a quote for about £600 for a new one. Was the sound the death knell for the pump or in your infinate wisdom could it be fixable for less than the quotation? Forgot to say TD4 1 2003 BMW diesel

The magnetic clutch went on mine, so I got a second hand pump for £50 delivered from 1stchoice.co.uk. It’s a search engine/comparison site that sends your parts request to a network of scrapyards in the UK.
 
Thanks for that I shall give them a try, sounds better than 600 even with the cost of sending it to france. I have a friend in Glasgow who will be arriving here next month so I may be able to have it sent to him and he can stick it in the car when he drives over.

If you remove the drive belt from the air con pump you can spin the pulley to see if the bearings have gone. If so it's possible to replace just the bearing. Or get hold of a replacement air con pump as said above. Sometimes the contents of the pump fail anorl.
 
Thank you M'Lord, that is what I was hoping for, that there might be a bearing problem, If not it must be the guts of the pump which I assume must be a pump replacement.
On an altogether different subject I was thinking about the VCU. I saw a guy that took them apart and refilled them, I was wondering whether you could drill a hole at the bottom and tap it out for a grease nipple then do the same on the opposite side at the top, drill it and tap it but don't screw in the nipple. After putting in the bottom nipple fill a high pressure grease gun with the recomended product and start pumping through the nipple until the new stuff starts coming out of the top. Put in the top nipple, press in the small ball bearing in the top of the nipple until new product comes out the release the bearing and see if you can get one more stroke on the grease gun.
Do you think that this is possible or am I just bonkers.

Can't help as I've never tried to fill one. I have put a vid on you tube showing how slowly the fluid seeps out of the vcu when a hole is drilled in it.

This link was sent to me by Guineafowl21 and contains all you need to know or would rather not know about DIY VCU refurbishing "@Alibro is your man to ask about VCU reconditioning". I have been posting a number of questions there and found Alibro and co realy helpfull, so that will be my next task if it needs doing urgently. BTW I have found an aircon compressor for £50 with a 3 month guarantee, can't be bad. I just hope that they are not too much of a PITA to change.
