can anyone tell me how to find out if my landy is tax exempt it was registerd early 73 and ive been told that they go of when she was made not registerd is this true if so how do i find out its my first landy and it would be a bonus if the tax was free

I think you need to contact Landrover and ask them for the records of when your chassis number was produced.
Also Tax exemption is not just a Pass or fail thing its is also done on a points system.
Ie. if you have a original tax exempt landy and you swap the engine for a modern engine that deducts so many points
and that with other changes may void its Historic status.

Ps
Its worth all the agro

have u got an address to cotact please ithink shes all original at min the worst thing onher is the interior which i was going to make and repair myself will that go against the points system or do i need to find out what original interior was in her?:)

from memory, its just the main parts of the car, ie the chassis, engine, body, drivetrain etc..
you loose points for every item changed. below a certain points level, you loose the tax exemption.

Facts are,
There are a possible total of 14 points for tax exemption. You have to retain 8 points to continue claiming tax exemption (Historic Status).

1 Point for the engine.
5 Points for the chassis.
2 Points for the transmission.
2 Points for the steering assembly.
2 Points for the suspension
2 Points for the axles.
= 14 Points in total.

For example, if you change the engine for a newer type 2.5 you will lose that 1 point. If you change the gearbox as well (for a newer type) you will lose another 2 points and so on.

Digressing slightly it's all designed to catch you out on the coil conversion with a cut down RR chassis. Lose the original chassis and use a cut down RR chassis with the RR coils and you've lost 7 points, therefore you can't retain 8 points. I know this much to my cost.
A RR chassis must remain at 100" wheelbase and be before 1973 to retain it's tax exemption because it is still essentially the same vehicle as on the V5 document. It doesnt matter if it has a telephone kiosk as the body, it's still an unmolested chassis.
Anything thats been cut down to reduce the wheelbase must be SVA'd as the structural integrity of the chassis has been altered. Believe me the authorities are clamping down on rogue vehicles that have been reduced between the wheelbase and which carry a tax exempt VIN and V5.

On a lighter note, series Landys are much more workable with replacement parts, if you put in a replacement reconditioned series engine this won't affect any points. The same goes for Parabolic springs, they are classed as a "Direct replacement part" so therefore the points system will not be affected for any vehicle before 1973.

ok thanks i think i got most of that so do u no the address of were to find if my chassie date. plus i know its me but how do u look in the gallery on main page i cant seem to open it i was hoping for some nice pics of landys to try and convince my wife they do look better when restored before she divorces me over it:D

I have just done the same thing with mine, i had to obtain prof that my land rover was constructed before 31.12.1972 althought it was first regestered on the 2.1.1973.

I had to buy a coppy of the orrignal factory build record, it cost £33 but it was well worth it as i have saved more than that already.

You can get a coppy of the build record from

The Heritage Motor Centre - Heritage Certificates

I hope this helps

so if i take my 100 inch down to my mot garage get a test on it and go to my local dvla office to tax it as its on a H plate but it was built in 1962 will they ask me for prof or want to look at the land rover ???

never had probs before but then i havent built a hybrid for a few years

Mine was made on the 18.11.1972 so it was only just over a month.

Mark you already have proof that it was made before the 31.12.1972 as th date of first registration will be before this. all you will have to do is to go to your dvla local office and ask to change the tax class to historic. you will also get a refund of any tax that is left on your landy.

yes iam ok with that bit as it says on the V5 that it was manifactured 1962 and registed 1972, its just that its a 109 on a 100 disco chassis with a tdi in it and looks like a 90 !

Well the law states as thus:

First regged before 7th January 1973 or manufactured before 1st of jan 1973 (but not including this date).

It will say on your log book the date of first registration, top left of the information page :D

whell from what i gather it wouldnt matter if you painted it pink put it on a sj413 chassis and fitted a jaguar V12. As when i registered mine they just looked at the papers i even went in a different car.

yes but you are committing a criminal offence if you tell and sign any porkies on the form.

You need to speak to the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon in Warwickshire. They have all the old factory records for Landrover and can tell you which day and date your Landrover rolled out of the factory, what colour it was, and where it went to.

They can also provide you with a certificate stating all this that you should be able to use to back-up your claim for Historical Vehicle registration.

Gary
