Driving at 20mph approx. Tapping/ticking heard from engine area. Landrover Td5 2001 auto drives for another 30 metres before engine management light comes on, engine cuts out and I cruise to a convenient stop. Engine turns over. At this point what's peoples diagnosis please?

Mechanic subsequently arrives, turns engine over several times before continually turning engine over at this point lots of metal grinding and clanking then the timer chain smashes through rocker cover and engine no longer turns over.
Is a recon engineer ough to repair?
Grateful for any advice please. TIA

The timing chain coming through any part of the engine is serious. The tapping you heard while being sort of "non-descript" could have been parts of the timing chain tensioner and "anti-slap" fittings.
Unfortunately, things seem to have moved on significantly since the chain presented itself to the outside world. There is very likely damage to the valves and/or piston crowns, maybe the valve guides could have suffered damage from trying to accommodate bent valve stems.
In my opinion the engine is probably scrap, unfortunately.

Thanks for your reply. That's what I thought regarding engine. Two more if you don't mind. Would I have needed a new engine at the point of the EML coming on and the engine cutting out? Do you think getting a recon engine will solve all the faults I described?

Some damage might have already happened when the eml came on. It's an arguable point that it may have been, at that point, repairable.

However you say 'engine turns over' so you presumably started it again after the eml came on, or how else do you know it still turns over? ... This probably breaks it further from the point of repair. Then the mechanic tries to start it a few times and starts it again until destruction ... effectively breaking it properly.

A recon engine should fix it simply 'cos it's a replacement engine. I wouldn't bank on being able to fix the broken engine economically. Might be interesting as a project .. ;)

Thanks for that. Yes understand re turning over part. It will be someone else paying so I have been asked to get a price and due to age I will go for a reconditioned quote. The mechanic was adamant it was the starter motor despite me saying otherwise. As long as a recon will solve all I will be happy. Many thanks
