started to strip off the bits ready to do the tappets but cannot work out what size and type socket that i need for the cam sprocket its a bit gnarled up and i dare not try anything but the proper socket that i need

Six point female torx socket. Forget what number it is. If bolt is damaged fit a new one. Different bolt for EGR and non EGR make sure you get the correct one. Make sure it's torqued correctly. This is the bolt for EGR. http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-STC2141

R/H try STC4183 that maybe the non EGR bolt. No photo but it should be just a solid bolt with no vac pump oil feed on it. Give them a ring and check it. Bolt - Genuine Land Rover at www.rimmerbros.co.uk

just went to order it and the bolt is on back order :( does it have to be a a star bolt or could i get a hex bolt of the same size

It's a special VHT bolt use anything else at your peril. If that breaks you are up ****s creek without a paddle.

Can this job get any worse got the new bolt and it doesn't fit I have a non egr engine so I ordered a non egr bolt and the end cap won't fit it's for a egr bolt  so I thought I would torque the cam cap nuts up and two sheared off not sure what to do with it now to get the studs out or whether I need a new head :(

From memory there are three sizes of studs fitted with different torque loadings. I take it you used the higher torque figure on the smaller diameter studs? I did advise you to ring them and ask for the Non EGR bolt as there was no illustration with one of the part numbers. The non EGR bolt does not have an oil feed for the vac pump.

no according to rave the torque values were 15lb foot i started at 10lb foot and they snapped , it was the non egr bolt that i got as i have a non egr engine and the end cap has a bigger pin so it does not fit so i did everything correct but two studs snapped but judging by work done previously on the engine i would not be surprised if they had been over stretched in the past as alot of bolts have been damaged and bungs missing from flywheel cam cover bolts chewed up and the likes but hey its the joy of motoring going to try and remove the studs and replace them with ones from a scrap engine

Sounds like some animal has been at it. Studs, three types fitted M6 10 nm - 7 lb ft. M7 15 nm - 11 lb ft. M8 20 nm - 15 lb ft. Measure the diameter of the studs bet they are 6 or 7 mm. Maybe you needed the other part number knowing Land rover the cheap bolt will not be the one you needed.

one the end cap of the non egr is there a pin that goes into the cam bolt if there isnt I was thinking of just cutting it off I know a new bolt is only £7.00 but its the arse on going back to the dealers again or ordering it online just want it back on the road now :):scratching_chin:

Don't know never worked on non EGR. STC2141 is all engines up to engine number 31428932. STC4183 is engine numbers beyond that. Look at your engine number and get the correct bolt. STC2141 is the earlier bolt and is £16.51 from Rimmers. STC4183 is £6.50 and is fitted to later engines.
