As above, this is starting to pee me off.
200Tdi 90, fuel gauge fluctuating for ages so finally got round to changing the sender unit while doing other work. Disappointed when a blue box turned up with the rest of the order but fitted it anyway and lo and behold works as intended. Worked fine for 12 months or so and then permanently showing empty, so bought another better quality (allmakes I think) and replaced the replacement. The problem with the ****part one was pretty obvious when it came out as the float was full of diesel.
6 months down the line and the new one is jumping all over the place, to be honest it acts as if it might be electrical rather than mechanical as the gauge moves quite rapidly from 1/4 to full, though when the tank is actually 1/4 full it acts as it should, when I fitted it I made sure all connections were good though, so guessing its the sender unit at fault.

Anyway my question is if there is anything I can replace the original float with as I kept the ****part one, I don't mind buying another IF I have to but would rather just fix the one with the leaky float. One thing I did consider was making a float out of a piece of wood, oak or similar, is there any logical reason why I can't do this??

Thanks for the reply, yes that is an option but will take some fettling as its a different shape (of course :() I did wonder about a ping pong ball, would it stand up to long term immersion in diesel?
Actually you just gave me a thought there, I might be able to cut the arm off the second one and fix the bottom end + float to the BP one.
Thanks :)
