Tailgate won't open

Hi guys, more problems..

5dr TD4

Done a search but can't find anything exactly the same. Rear door won't open, glass doesn't drop either and no sound when the handle is depressed. Can't operate rear windows either.

It's also beeping when I lock it - which make me think it's not shut correctly. Doesn't budge a inch when you pull the handle though.

UPDATE

Disconnected battery but still not working. It now makes a beeping noise when I try to lower the rear windows. Rear wiper also not operating.

FUTHER UPDATE

Open rear door, but glass wont drop now!

Be carefull not to break the rear glass when shutting i would look at all connections and maybe sray som wd40

Right what a nightmare spent all afternoon on this.

Checked front fuse & relay which is located in the rear of boot by the suspension strut behind the facia. That was clicking ok when opperating the window (which wasn't open). Stopped getting the beeping noise after disconnecting batter for second time.

Couldn't get it working. Joked that as soon as a drove home from father in laws it would start working - low and behold it has!

Still no idea what the problem was. Wires look ok - was a bit of wet in the door itself.

I've seen a second thread on this where it starting working for no reason.

Could do with getting to the bottom it of really.

hi there we have the same problem with girlfriends 02 td4. Apparently either the door handle or window regulator when it fails affects the whole system. WE're just waiting for spare cash to get it fixed. according to local lr specialist he's had a few in with the same problem.

Its strange. I ruled out the fuses and relays.

Rear wiper, door handle, heated window and rear window wouldn't operate. Obvisouly all four can't fail at the same time (and then fix themselves).

I checked cables etc and all looked well.

A few have had this simply resolve itself, I disconnected the battery to get the door open then it just started working when I drove home.

No idea what could be causing it as it affect so many things that just starts working. I'm not sure replacing the regulator or door mechnism is the solution.

There is obvisouly a common fault on this as I have heard many people suffering from it.

if everything stops working has to be a connector or earthing problem

I have same problem, yesterday, dog in the car hot, so wound the rear tailgate down to give him some air then looked in rear view and it had sprang back half way, so I wound it all the way up and it mad a bit of a groaning noise, and then wouldn't go back down!!! I've already got back passenger windows held up with ruddy sticky things because they have gone, or else they just drop down whilst your driving along. Now I can't use my boot, tried disconnecting battery, checked fuses! Any ideas anyone, I know this is an old thread but hey ho! Nothing but problems with this in the time I've had it for one year. The last one I had was the dreaded 1.8 petrol with problem after problem head gasket and all!! Losing faith in being a landrover owner! Much as I love it!

I have had the same problems. The last time it happened was after giving someone a jump start. My battery is new and ok. It used to happen a lot if the doors were left open for a while or some other drain on the previous battery. I think that as this is all controlled by its own ECU I am thinking it is down to battery voltage. Could be wrong but have never proved anything conclusive and then it all works ok again. Any other ideas??

This is almost certainly down to regulated voltage supply coming from the battery to the ECU. In my case I had the problem after using a mini compressor to top up the air in the two front tyres. Not a massive drain on the battery but even with the engine running it was enough to spike out and drop the voltage as detected by the ECU. Completed the job and put the compressor in the back of the Freelander and closed the tail gate door. Drove another thirty or so miles that day then parked up back home and garaged the car. Came to open the tail gate and the glass wouldn’t drop or the door open. Tried to lower the glass with the control switch next to the hand brake – no luck.

Suspecting there might be something wrong with the ECU (seen this on other cars where strange things happen for no apparent reason) I disconnected the battery to go for a full reset! Thirty seconds should do it – just long enough for any residual charge to be removed from all circuits. Connected up again and tried to lower the glass with the control button (switch) next to the hand brake. This time a beeping noise could be heard suggesting the ECU was not receiving the correct signal back from the tail gate management sector. To overcome this start the engine so the supply to the battery and therefore battery output equals or exceeds twelve volts. When you do this the ECU ‘calls out’ to all systems it manages and gets a ‘clean’ call back. Once it’s happy – about thirty seconds you will find your tail gate door opens (glass drops) and closes fine. Your glass up glass down button next to the hand brake will now work fine too. As will your heated rear window and rear wiper and washer – which are all part of the same management sector on the ECU.

in essence I believe there is a ‘floor’ in the ECU where it interprets fluctuations in battery output as errors. I can kind of see why it would do this but for things to fail in a sort of lock out mode – hmmm not so sure about that. Perhaps Landrover can explain!

Had this before where it was on the first catch.. I had to put my shoulder to it while activating the button basically shoving it as hard as I could I'd did work tho..

sounds as though your wires cables in the door have gone

There must be something in this lock out theory ...mine did it after being in the local garage for a code read ( yellow hdc on ) - when I got it back and went to open the tailgate - it was locked shut even though the glass would work on the button etc - it just would not glass drop / open on the handle - 2 months later I tried just holding in the tailgate handle trigger for longer ..after about 5 seconds it opened as normal and has been fine since - I don't know if this was some kind of reset.. but I was amazed when it opened
