Hi all.

Just watchin BBC 1 and on a cop show they just arrested a guy for not having a tacho in a defender towing something. I use my defender for personal use but occasionally do a bit of towing for work. I have non commercial van insurance with business use on it. Does this mean I would need a tacho for towing or not? Little confused...

I think if towing gross weight of 3 1/2 tonnes and commercial use you need a tacho if private and towing your big boat etc its ok, but dont hold me to this.
I know a lot of builders in pick ups towing mini diggers ect are getting nicked for no tacho

what a turd. Cant beleave he was so calm about it all

I know how is anybody that thick with only one head.:doh::doh: Copper basically told him that he knew he was lying, but he just carried on anyway :rolleyes::rolleyes:

With regard to OP like has been said I think you do need a tachograph, i'm sure I seen a few relevant threads knocking about. Have a search pal, i'd have a look but i'm on my phone and its a bit of a ball ache;);)

tacho for hire or reward=so you not doing for reward

or recovery within 100km of base

Nice man at vosa answered all my questions.

I have a tacho in my d2 for when I tow for work. So most of the time it does not get used but I'm glad I have it.

Got pulled just before Christmas when towing the trailer on the way to a gig for work. He asked if it was a private car etc and the purpose of today's driving. Bit obvious really with a 14' trailer all branded up with the companies details and 3 big lads with identical branded tops, oh and a load of truss on the roof :). Anyway I showed him the tacho and I think to be honest he was a bit disappointed. He signed it and let me go about my way after doing a licence and registration check.

There were 2 cars out one spotting and the other doing the pulling. When I showed him the tacho he said his Sargent was convinced that the disco wouldn't have one so was worth a pull. I heard him on the radio as I left saying turns out he did have one.

Soo. Tacho needed for towing for work as it's for reward? Bugger.

Well depends on distance and reason. There are a few exemptions if you stay close to base and if it's nit your main job (the driving) but getting the tools for instance to your job.

Also recall sone LPG exemptions but do check with vosa first about the exact details of the exemptions.

I think you need to keep a log book of journeys if your exempt as well.
