Swivel question

Defender 90 300tdi 1997

After stripping down and fitting a new cv joint, re greased everything, bearings, swivel grease etc. re built everything torqued up, put wheels on and found there was play in the swivel bearings top and bottom that wasn't there before, took a shim out the top and all ok.

Question is why would this happen ????

must have been loose before but its worth checking both bearings, unlike the earlier top bush type ,the bearings dont need much wear before they are buggered, plat will allways appear in both top and bottom, though if jacked up play will seem to be at bottom ,on the ground the play appears at the top

Just had a thought, when I stripped the O/S/F down I found the CV joint bronze bush was missing, fitted a new one replaced everything as already mentioned and the swivel play was on the O/S/F also,

Would they be connected ????

There was no play before, checked both sides before starting the strip down
